PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After jumping on the board first and battling back-and-forth through the first two periods, the Brown women's hockey team fell by a score of 5-2 to Penn State on Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. Sophomore Maya Mangiafico and junior Anna Gallagher each scored their first career goals for the Bears. Brown tied the game early in the second period, but PSU scored late in the period, then pulled away with two goals in the latter stages of the third. The victory moves Penn State to 3-3-2 on the season while Brown slips to 0-1-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Freshman Anna Hurd added one assist on Sunday and now has three points through her first two collegiate games.
- Senior Shay Maloney collected her first point of the season with an assist on Gallagher's game-tying goal in the second period.
- In addition to scoring her first career goal, Gallagher blocked three shots.
- Brown went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Penn State scored on all three of its power play chances.
- Hayley Kliczko made 29 saves for Brown, and now has 59 stops through the first two games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After drawing a tripping penalty to go on the power play, Brown jumped on the board first at 6:20 of the opening period. Mangiafico grabbed a loose puck behind the net, brought it around from the left side and bounced it in off a defender for her first point of the season.
- The Nittany Lions answered right back just 1:32 later with a power play goal of their own when Julie Gough jumped on a rebound at the top of the crease and slid it into the net to knot it 1-1.
- Penn State struck once again on the power play with just five seconds remaining in the first period when Natalie Heising grabbed the puck from the boards and buried a quick wrister from the right wing circle to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game 2-1.
- Brown responded with the equalizer at 6:06 of the second period on a beautiful one-timer from the slot by Gallagher. Hurd fed one ahead to Maloney, who skated it into the offensive zone and delivered a centering pass to Gallagher, who one-timed it top shelf on the glove side from the edge of the left wing circle to tie the score 2-2.
- Penn State retook the lead at the 13:18 mark of the second, one again on the power play when Kiara Zanon grabbed the puck in the slot after a scrum, and got a clean look at the net before putting it just under the bar to give PSU a 3-2 they would not relinquish.
- Penn State grabbed the first two-goal lead of the weekend for either team at 13:25 of the third period when Alyssa Machado grabbed a steal in the neutral zone, then skated in 2-on-1 and worked a give-and-go with Rachel Weiss. Weiss sent the pass back to Machado in front of the net and she redirected it past Kliczko for a big insurance goal.
- Weiss added another point to her total with 1:28 remaining when she came away with a steal at her own defensive blue line and skated in it alone and scored an empty netter that locked down the Penn State win.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: MELANIE RUZZI
- "There is a tremendous amount of grit and effort tin this group. We played a full seven periods of hockey this weekend and we never gave up. They competed incredibly hard and I was proud of their effort and their execution. We're getting better all the time."
- "Our younger kids are showing up on the scoresheet, but our upperclassmen and senior leadership has been tremendous. That is what allows those girls to enjoy what they're doing and play at a high tempo, feel like they have a group around them that believes in them so they can let their talent show. The younger kids cannot show up if the older kids don't believe in them and put a lot of faith in them too. It's a full team effort."
- "Looking ahead, we're focused 100 percent on Quinnipiac right now. We've got to be ready. In the ECAC we play a different opponent each night so we don't have the luxury of turning over from game one, learning from it and getting ready for game two because we play a different opponent, so we're ready for Quinnipiac in game one and then we'll turn our attention to Princeton after that."
