PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer defeated Princeton 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Goals from three different players and two assists from Zoe Maxwell lifted the Bears over a tough Ivy League opponent in the Tigers.
"I thought it was a great team effort from us today," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I think sometimes our team doesn't get the credit that we're due, so now beating a good team like Princeton [maybe we will.]
Brittany Raphino opened the scoring for the Bears in the 10th minute of action when she got on the end of a pass from Maxwell and beat the Tiger goalie on a tough angle.
Kayla Duran doubled the lead in the second, after the Brown defense withstood an onslaught of pressure from the Princeton forwards at the end of the first, in the 58th minute. A corner fell to the feet of Maxwell who fired a shot and Duran was there to collect the deflection.
Ava Seelenfreund made it a three-goal lead when she sent in a rocket from 30 yards out, depositing it in the top right corner of the net.
"Kayla, Brittany, and Ava scored some great goals for us in big time moments," McNeill said. "I thought our defense was lock-down, did a really good job shutting down their forwards and their midfield."
The Tigers got one back in the 66th minute of action after they were awarded a penalty kick. Kayla Thompson guessed the right way, but the shot was just out of her reach.
The Bear defense, at times led by Duran and Charlotte DeVaugn, did a good job to limit Princeton in the final minutes of the game and didn't allow any more quality looks on goal.
"I Charlotte DeVaughn played tremendously," McNeill said. "From front to back, I thought it was a great team effort and a great team win for us."
Princeton outshot Brown 9-8 and earned more corners at 9-2, but the Bears made the most of their opportunities to claim the hard-fought victory. Thompson made five saves in goal.
Brown will continue Ivy League play next Saturday, Oct. 16 with a 4 p.m. matchup at Harvard.
