
Women’s Soccer Selects Cummings, Brown, Bermudez as 2020 Captains

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rising senior Sydney Cummings, rising senior Cameron Brown, and rising junior Sara Bermudez will serve Brown University women's soccer as captains during the 2020 season, Brown head coach Kia McNeill announced on Wednesday.
Now a two-year captain, Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) has played 4,803 of a possible 4,822 minutes (99.6 percent) during her career as a center back and has earned All-Ivy honors in all three seasons. Last season, she garnered a number of accolades, including Second Team All-America, First Team All-Ivy unanimously, First Team All-East Region, First Team NEWISA All-New England, Words Unlimited Female Athlete of the Year honors, First Team Scholar All-America, First Team Scholar All-East Region, and Academic All-Ivy.
Brown (Portsmouth, Va.) has helped Brown post 24 shutouts as a team from 2017-19. Last season she started all 19 games as a center back and played 1,784 of a possible 1,790 minutes on the season (99.7 percent). A 2018 All-Ivy pick, she played a critical role for a Brown defense that ranked second in the NCAA in goals allowed (eight), third in save percentage (.890), and fourth in GAA (0.40).
Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) started 10 games as a defensive midfielder last season and did not leave the field in eight of the 10 games in which she played. Playing a key role in the team's defensive shape, she helped the Bears set single-season program records for wins (14), home wins (11), and shutouts (13).
In 2019, the Bears posted an overall record of 14-2-3, while registering an undefeated 6-0-1 mark in Ivy League play, finishing the year unbeaten in conference play for the first time since 1994. Brown notched an 11-0-1 mark at home, including an 11-0-0 record during the regular season.
Brown won its 13th Ivy League title in program history, tied for the most in conference history, while making its seventh all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Bears advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament after topping Monmouth in a penalty kick shootout, 4-1.
In the final national rankings, Brown stood at No. 11 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, No. 13 in the NCAA RPI, and No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
