
Women’s Lacrosse Readies for No. 23 Virginia Tech on Wednesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team will open up a four-game homestand on Wednesday, March 11, hosting No. 23 Virginia Tech at 4:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The game will be televised on NESN and streamed on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Brown was defeated by Yale, 11-10, on Saturday at Reese Stadium. The Bears held an 8-5 lead at the 18:45 mark of the second half but the Bulldogs scored six of the next eight goals for the one-goal win. After Yale's Anna Vetsch scored the go-ahead goal at 1:35, Brown forced a turnover to gain possession with just under a minute remaining, but the Bulldogs returned the favor and caused a turnover with 10 seconds left to ice the game. Sophomore Claire Jeschke led the Bears in scoring with four points on two goals and two assists while sophomore Alaina Parisella added a career-high three goals.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech is 7-2 so far this season and 1-1 in the ACC while ranking 23rd in the IWLCA Coaches Poll. A 18-8 loss to No. 3 Syracuse on Sunday snapped the Hokies six game win streak. Virginia Tech's other loss this year came at No. 17 James Madison, 9-8, in overtime on Feb 12. Kayla Frank leads the squad in scoring with 44 points on an even 22 goals and 22 assists. Paige Petty is the team's leading goal scorer with 36 tallies on the year. She also has five assists to total 41 points and leads the team in draw controls (46). The Hokie defense is led by Mary Clare McCarthy and Elena Ricci who each have 12 caused turnovers while Ricci leads all players with 22 ground balls. Angie Benson has started all nine games between the pipes and has a 6.73 goals-against average and a .553 save percentage.
ALL-TIME VS. VIRGINIA TECH
Wednesday's contest will be the first ever between the two teams. Brown has played three schools located in Virginia - George Mason (1-0), James Madison (0-1), Old Dominion (1-1) - and has gone a combined 2-2 against those teams.

Sophomore Sophia DeRosa leads the team with 18 points on 15 goals and three assists. She has recorded a hat trick or better in three of Brown's six games this season. Sophomore Claire Jeschke is second in scoring with 16 points on 11 goals and five assists while junior Risa Mosenthal is behind her in third (14G, 1A). Defensively, junior Allison Lanzone leads the team in caused turnovers with eight. Junior Mason Warble and sophomore Erin Schafer are tied for second in caused turnovers (6) while Schafer has a team-best 11 ground balls. CHASING CAREER MARKS
A 2019 First Team All-Ivy selection, junior Risa Mosenthal is chasing multiple program records. The Campton, N.H. native has recorded 120 goals and 18 assists for 138 points. Her 120 goals are already third-best at Brown while her 138 points are eighth. Mosenthal passed Phoebe Koch '98 (101-36-137) in her game at Yale on Saturday with two goals.
FOWLER WITH THE HELP
Junior Maggie Fowler is currently ninth all-time at Brown in career assists with 40. Her 23 assists in 2019 led the team a year ago while her six helpers this season lead the 2020 Bears. Fowler's 1.00 assists per game average ranks 10th in the Ivy League.
MOSENTHAL NAMED TO TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
Junior attack Risa Mosenthal was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-straight year on Feb. 13. A First Team All-Ivy selection in 2019, Mosenthal has led the Bears in scoring for two-straight seasons and registered 59 points on 51 goals and eight assists a year ago. She broke the school record for goals in a game with nine against Fresno State (Mar. 31), which also tied the Ivy League record. Mosenthal led the conference in goals per game (3.64) and was sixth in points per game (4.21) last season. As a freshman, Mosenthal was named Second Team All-Ivy and earned a spot on the Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie Team while leading the Bears in points (64) and goals (55). Her 55 goals were second best all-time at Brown for a season while her 64 points were the third highest. The Tewaaraton Award is given annually to the most outstanding American college lacrosse player. The 20th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held May 28, 2020 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.
WINNING AT THE DRAW
Brown is third in the conference in draw controls per game (14.50), trailing only Cornell (15.00) and Princeton (16.25).Freshman Emmie Lau leads the team with 27 draws this season while junior Mason Warble adds 22. Lau's 4.50 draws per game are fifth best in the league. The Bears tallied a season-high 18 draws against Siena on Feb. 18.

Brown is second in the Ivy League in shot percentage (.469) with 75 goals on 160 shots with Dartmouth leading the conference at .490 (74 goals on 151 shots).
THREE IVIES RANKED IN NATIONAL POLL
The Ivy League - a consistent factor in the national women's lacrosse landscape - boasts a trio of ranked teams in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Coaches Poll. Penn (9), Dartmouth (10) and Princeton (13) are all ranked in the poll.
IVY LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
The 2020 Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Tournament will be held at the site of the top seed on Friday, May 1 and Sunday, May 3 with the conference's top four teams playing in the tournament.

PRESEASON IVY LEAGUE POLL
Brown was selected to finish fifth with 57 points in the 2020 Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Preseason Poll. Princeton was predicted to finish first with 13 first-place votes and 125 points while Penn followed in second with three first-place votes and 112 points. Dartmouth (92 points) and Cornell (79 points) rounded out the top four while Harvard (48 points), Yale (36 points) and Columbia (27 points) finished sixth through eighth.
CENTER FOR LACROSSE AND SOCCER
Brown unveiled its new Center for Lacrosse and Soccer at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Feb. 18. A premier facility for lacrosse and soccer that will enhance both the team and game day experience and replaces the existing press box and stands in the same location. The approximately 22,500 square foot building has a grandstand to accommodate 1,250 people, as well as concessions and restrooms located on the concourse level. The building will have event space for game-day hosting and team gatherings, new staff and team locker rooms, a training room, and players will have direct access to the field through a tunnel.
BEARS WELCOME EIGHT NEWCOMERS
Brown added eight players to its 2020 roster. The freshmen include: attack Nathalie Ahn, midfielder Essie Atherton, midfielder Lydia Bongiorno, attack Lily Hagerup, midfielder Emmie Lau, midfielder Mia Mascone, attack Gabby Sartori and defender Katie Silver.

Brown went 8-7 overall in 2019 and finished tied for fourth with Cornell in the Ivy League standings with a 4-3 conference mark, its best conference record since the 1999 season (4-3). A total of six Bears earned All-Ivy honors with Risa Mosenthal leading the group with First Team accolades. Mason Warble made the Second Team while Erin Schafer and Erin Tucker were picked Honorable Mention for the 2020 returning team members. Warble was also selected to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region Second Team after leading the Bears in caused turnovers (32) and ground balls (41). Her 32 caused turnovers are tied for fourth best in a season at Brown while her 41 ground balls were 15th. Warble ranked second in the conference in caused turnovers per game (2.13) and was fifth in ground balls per game (2.73).

Tucker recorded an 11.54 goals-against average and a .428 save percentage and made double digit saves in eight games. She tallied a collegiate best 13 saves at Dartmouth and also added a career high six ground balls versus the Big Green. Junior Cait Barrett also returns after appearing in five games last season.
