PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated No. 23 Virginia Tech, 13-11, on Wednesday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field in its final game of the season. Per the Ivy League, all spring athletic events have been canceled due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Brown (4-3) jumped out to an 8-4 lead by halftime and held off a second half charge by the 23rd-ranked Hokies. Junior Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) led all scorers with five goals, tying her season high, while sophomore Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) recorded 11 saves which included nine stellar stops in the second half.
"I'm so proud of the team," said head coach Keely McDonald. "They knew before the game that the rest of the season was canceled per the Ivy League release. To come together and rally and do schematically what we were supposed to do, and to play with heart is not easy in any game and it's not easy when you've had such emotional news. I'm just really proud of this group. I thought Virginia Tech was aggressive and physical and played really hard at the end. We had some close ones before this that we didn't finish so to finish under these circumstances speaks so much to the level of character and kind of kids we have in the program and the coaches within the program."
It was a tale of two halves as the Bears dominated the opening 30 minutes and the Hokies controlled the second. The Bears outshot the visitors by a 22-8 margin in the first en route to their 8-4 lead.
