Women’s Tennis Falls to Columbia, 4-0, on First Day of the ECAC Championship

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Brown women's tennis team was defeated by Columbia, 4-0, on Friday at the ECAC Championship at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
"Columbia came out with much more conviction and energy in doubles, which definitely carried over to the first part of our singles play," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "We did a much better job in the latter parts of our singles, but the momentum was squarely in Columbia's corner at that point. Every match is a learning opportunity and I'm confident we will come out with more energy and belief in our abilities tomorrow against Cornell."
The Lions clinched the doubles point by recording a 6-0 win in the third position and a 6-1 victory in second doubles. Columbia followed by opening the singles round with three-straight wins, finishing in order of third singles, fourth singles and second singles.
Junior Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) was tied (3-3) with No. 116 Akanksha Bhan in her second set of her first singles match after falling 6-3 in the first set. Sophomore Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) also held a 5-4 lead in her second set of fifth singles before the match was called.
The Bears continue play at the ECAC Championship and will compete against Cornell tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 8) at 8:00 a.m.
