
Softball Drops Decisions to CSUN, Long Beach at San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior Katie O'Leary hit the Bears' first home run of the season, but Brown University softball dropped decisions to California State University Northridge, 5-1, and Long Beach State University, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex in its second day at the San Diego Classic.
The Bears (1-8) fell to the Matadors (14-4) to open the day before their setback to the 49ers (10-9) despite the home run from O'Leary that brought Brown within 2-1 through four innings.
"We played two teams from California pretty tough today," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We'll keep working to get better each day."
O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) went 2-for-5 with her home run between the two games. So far at the tournament she has hit .333 with a .667 slugging percentage. Senior pitcher Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) tallied a 2.00 ERA over 7.0 innings on the day.
Next, Brown concludes play at the San Diego Classic tomorrow – Sunday, Mar. 1 – against San Jose State at noon ET.
Game 1: CSUN 5, Brown 1
Sophomore Elayna Tsiouplis registered one of two extra-base hits in the game, but Brown fell to California State University, Northridge, 5-1, in its first game of the day and third game at the San Diego Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears plated a run in the top of the fifth before the Matadors held on for the win.
Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.) notched a double and a run scored, and freshman Nicole Kim (San Diego, Calif.) posted an RBI. Junior Katie O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) and sophomore Madeline Charles (Fillmore, Calif.) each added a hit.
Freshman Erin Elgas (Belgrade, Mont.) tossed 4.0 innings in the start, permitting five runs, four earned, on seven hits with one strikeout. Senior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits.
For CSUN, Kenedee Jamerson threw a complete-game 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts, while finishing 3-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate.
The Matadors opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the second, moving ahead 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Matadors added two more runs on a two-run single from Jamerson, taking a 5-0 edge.
The Bears countered with a run in the top of the fifth as Tsiouplis sent a double up the middle before coming home on an RBI single to center field from Kim.
Game 2: Long Beach State 6, Brown 2

The Bears remained within 2-1 through four innings behind the home run from O'Leary before the 49ers extended their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) tallied her first homer of the second and her second homer of her career. Freshman Meghan Gormley (North Kingstown, R.I.) hit an RBI double, junior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) posted a hit and a run scored, and senior Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) added a hit.
In the circle, senior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw 5.0 innings in the start, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits. Junior Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) tossed 1.0 inning of hitless relief with one strikeout.
For Long Beach, pitcher Ashley Coleman hurled a complete-game 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Long Beach started the game's scoring, taking a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
