SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior pitcher Grace Ladd did not allow an earned run in 5.0 innings of relief, but Brown University softball fell to San Jose State University, 5-0, on Sunday morning at SDSU Softball Stadium in its third and final day of action at the San Diego Classic.
Playing in their fifth and final game of the weekend, the Bears (1-9) allowed just two runs after the first inning but could not come back against the Spartans (19-3) – a team receiving votes in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll.
"We played tough against a very good San Jose State team that is just outside the top 25 nationally," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We'll take the next two weeks to make some adjustments in practice before we head to Florida."
Freshman Nicole Kim (San Diego, Calif.) went 2-for-3 while junior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) posted a hit and a walk. Junior Katie O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) and sophomores Kat Clum (Fort Worth, Texas), Madeline Charles (Fillmore, Calif.), and Ivy Hobson (Los Angeles, Calif.) each added a hit.
Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) threw 5.0 innings in relief, giving up just one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts. Senior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 2.0 innings in the start, allowing four runs.
For the weekend, O'Leary hit .333 (5-for-15) with a home run, double, and two RBIs while Ladd tallied a 1.91 ERA over 11.0 innings pitched.
For SJSU, Caroline Bowman tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in the start, striking out three. Jenessa Ullegue hurled 3.2 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first behind an RBI double from Suzy Brookshire and a two-run double from Alyssa Graham. SJSU tacked on a run in each of the third and fifth innings to go up 5-0.
The Bears threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Chavarria led off the inning with a single to right field before Hobson advanced her to third with a single to center field.
Next, Brown has an off weekend before competing at The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla., against South Dakota State (Mar. 13, 2:00 p.m.), Indiana (Mar. 13, 4:30 p.m.), Lafayette (Mar. 14, 9:00 a.m.), Quinnipiac (Mar. 14, 2:00 p.m.), Buffalo (Mar. 15, 9:00 a.m.), and Butler (Mar. 15, 11:30 a.m.).
