Three More School Records Fall as Men’s Swimming & Diving Concludes Day Three of the Ivy League Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three more school records were broken by the Brown men's swimming & diving team on day three of the Ivy League Championships on Friday at Blodgett Pool. The Bears are now up to five school records set at the championships. Freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) broke a school record for a second-consecutive night (1000 freestyle) while sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) (400 IM) and junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) (200 freestyle) also put their names in the record book.
Brown remains in fourth place after three days of competition with 675.5 points while Harvard leads the field with 936 points. Princeton (826) and Columbia (694) sit ahead of the Bears in the standings.
The night opened with the 1000 freestyle where Scheidl finished fourth overall with a time of 9:02.75, besting the previous record of 9:08.60. Junior Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) (9:13.86, 11th) and sophomore Nico Ortega (Caracas, Venezuela/Westport, Conn.) (9:14.53, 15th) also competed in the event.
Hayes next broke his own program record in the 400 IM, swimming to a NCAA B-cut time of 3:50.11 and third place. Scheidl joined Hayes in the A-Final, placing sixth in 3:53.18 while junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added a seventh-place finish in the B-Final (3:56.01).
Sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) led the Bears in the 100 butterfly in second place of the B-Final with a time of 47.64 with senior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) also taking eighth (49.08).
Lincoln broke the third program record of the night in the 200 freestyle with a NCAA B-cut time of 1:35.09, good for third place in the top final. Brown had four swimmers in the B-Final with senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) grabbing first in 1:36.85 with sophomore Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) behind in second (1:37.47). Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) (1:38.74, sixth) and freshman Tyler Lu (Pleasanton, Calif.) (1:39.07, eighth) rounded out the performances.
The 100 breaststroke saw freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas) compete in the A-Final and finish in sixth (54.70).
Senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) paced Brown in the 100 backstroke, coming in fifth of the A-Final with a NCAA B-cut time of 47.74. Senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the C-Final in 48.87 with Hess taking fourth (49.41) while sophomore Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) added an eighth-place finish in the B-Final (49.65).
In diving, sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) finished ninth with a score of 344.94, a zone qualifying score, while senior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) turned in a score of 217.45 (16th).
Sullivan, Huang, Qiao and Lincoln teamed up to finish fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:13.58 to end the night.
The Bears will wrap up the Ivy League Championship tomorrow (Feb. 29) with prelims starting at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay starting at 6:00 p.m.
