CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team recorded its best finish since 2002, placing fourth with 976.5 points at the Ivy League Championships on Saturday at Blodgett Pool. Harvard won the championships for the fourth-straight year (1439 points) with Princeton (1231 points) and Yale (1027.5) following.
"It was an amazing performance by our team this weekend," said head coach Kevin Norman. "We got contributions from everyone in our lineup, from seniors building off their success from last season to newcomers breaking school records and several breakout swimmers. This was a total team effort. We found ourselves in a tight battle with Yale and Columbia, two very good programs, and it came down to the wire. We didn't have quite enough to overcome Yale's six divers but were able to edge out Columbia at the end. Jumping from sixth to fourth is a huge step forward for our program and something we will build on in the future."
Senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) (200 backstroke) and freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas) (200 breaststroke) highlighted the action for the Bears with school records in their respective events, bringing Brown's total of program records set at the championships to seven.
Junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the Bears in the night's first event, the 1650 freestyle, placing 13th with a time of 15:29.06. Sophomore Nico Ortega (Caracas, Venezuela/Westport, Conn.) (15:40.97, 20th) and freshman Tyler Lu (Pleasanton, Calif.) (15:46.86, 20th) also competed in the event.
Sullivan next broke his own school record in the 200 backstroke, swimming to a NCAA B-cut time of 1:44.11 to finish third. His previous mark of 1:44.27 was set during his sophomore season. Sophomore Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) took seventh in the B-Final (1:48.79) and sophomore Billy Knaul (Sudbury, Mass.) added a sixth-place finish in the C-Final (1:49.50).
Senior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) came in second of the 100 freestyle with a NCAA B-cut time of 43.22 to earn Second Team All-Ivy honors. Senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) (43.77 - NCAA B-cut) and senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) (44.08) joined Cline in the top final, going 7-8. Senior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) also placed sixth in the C-Final (45.56).
Another NCAA B-cut time was turned in by the Bears in the 200 breaststroke, with Huang finishing fourth in the A-Final in 1:57.70, besting sophomore Ben Hayes' (River Hills, Wis.) 1:58.33 set earlier this season for a new school record. Hayes competed in the C-Final and took second in 1:59.51.
Junior Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) led Brown in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.74 in the A-Final for seventh. Sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) added a fourth place-finish in the B-Final (1:48.32) and junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) came in second of the C-Final (1:51.90).
The 400 freestyle relay concluded the championships with a team of Cline, Lincoln, Sung and Smilenov coming in fourth with a time of 2:54.75.
