
Scheidl Breaks the 500 Freestyle School Record as Men’s Swimming & Diving Sits in Fourth on Day Two of the Ivy League Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team concluded day two of the Ivy League Championships on Thursday in fourth place with 318.5 points. Freshman Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) highlighted the day for Bears by breaking the 500 freestyle school record twice in both the prelims and finals.
Harvard leads the championship with 489 points while Princeton (450) and Yale (333.5) sit ahead of Brown.
The 500 freestyle led off the night's finals where Scheidl set a new program mark with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:21.79 for sixth place. Scheidl broke the original school record of 4:22.60 set by junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) in the day's prelims, swimming to a 4:21.84, only to shave more time off the record in the A-Final at night. Lincoln won the C-Final of the event in 4:22.36, also a NCAA B-cut time, while junior Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) (4:24.69) and freshman Tyler Lu (Pleasanton, Calif.) (4:27.01) finished in third and fourth, respectively. Lincoln's time also bested his original school record.
Senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) was just off of his own school record in the 200 IM (1:45.11), finishing in 1:45.13 (NCAA B-cut) and in fourth place in the top final. Sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) claimed eighth in the B-Final (1:49.73) while freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas) (1:49.00, second) and junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (1:50.40, seventh) competed in the C-Final.
Senior Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) led Brown in the 50 freestyle in seventh place of the A-Final in 20.04. Senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) tied for second in the B-Final in 20.20 with senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) following in fourth (20.24). Sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) swam in the C-Final and placed fourth in 20.57.
In diving, senior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) scored a 254.30 and 254.05, respectively, in the 1M prelims.
The Bears ended the day with the 200 freestyle relay and came in fifth, with Cline, Sung, Sullivan and Smilenov turning in a time of 1:19.75.
The Bears will have their third day of competition at Ivy League Championship tomorrow (Feb. 28) with prelims starting at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 1000 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving consolations finals and the 400 medley relay starting at 6:00 p.m.
