WILMINGTON, N.C. – Brown University softball dropped a 2-1 decision to George Washington University and a 6-0 decision to Eastern Kentucky University on Sunday in its third and final day of competition at the Tournament by the Beach at UNC Wilmington's Boseman Field.
The Bears (1-4) put the tying run on third and winning run on second before falling to the Colonials (3-11) in game one prior to their setback against the Colonels (11-2).
"Although it didn't show up in the results, we played much better softball today," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "Our defense was much cleaner, we had an improved approach at the plate, and Grace Ladd and Lauren Innerst both gave us quality starts in complete games. We will fix a few things in practice this week before we head to San Diego."
Junior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) went 3-for-6 with a double and a run between the two games. Over the course of the weekend, Chavarria hit .333 with two doubles and three RBIs while freshman pitcher Erin Elgas (Belgrade, Mont.) compiled a 1.56 ERA over 9.0 innings pitched.
Next, Brown competes at the San Diego Classic, facing North Dakota (Feb. 28, 5:00 p.m. ET), San Diego (Feb. 28, 10:00 p.m. ET), CSUN (Feb. 29, 2:30 p.m. ET), Long Beach State (Feb. 29, 5:00 p.m. ET), and San Jose State (Mar. 1, noon ET).

Freshman Nicole Kim (San Diego, Calif.) recorded her first collegiate triple, sophomore Madeline Charles (Fillmore, Calif.) posted a single and an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and junior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) notched a single and a run scored.
Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) threw a complete-game 7.0 innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in the loss.
For GW, pitcher Faith Weber threw a complete-game 7.0 innings in the win, conceding one unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts, while hitting two solo home runs at the plate.

The Bears then put runners on second and third with two outs behind a walk and wild pitch before Weber closed the game with a strikeout.
