PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team trailed No. 2 Cornell by one goal after 40 minutes, but the Big Red added two goals in the third to seal the win, as the Bears dropped a 3-0 decision Saturday at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (7-18-2, 7-11-2) split the final home weekend of the regular season after Friday's win over Colgate. Cornell improved to 21-2-4, 16-2-2.
"They're obviously a very good hockey team," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "They're very good structurally, they make you earn every bit of ice, but we got better as the game went on. I thought we played with a lot of intensity, but just was one of those games."
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped 21 shots in the loss. Matthew Galajda had 19 saves for the Big Red.
Cornell struck first midway through the opening period, as Matt Stienburg finished a one timer from Jeff Malott for the one-goal lead after 20 minutes. Galaajda turned away back-to-back bids from Cole Quisenberry (Denver, Colo.) and Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) during Brown's power play late in the period.
Brown and Cornell had eight shots apiece in a scoreless middle frame. The Bears were able to generate offensive opportunities during their second power play of the game, highlighted by a good look from Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) in front of the net, but Galajda kept the home side off the board.
Sam Malinski made it a two-goal game at 12:39 in the third period. After receiving a pass from Tristan Mullin at the right circle, he flicked a shot into the slot, where the puck hit off a Brown player's skate and went into the back of the net.
Morgan Barron tacked on an empty-net goal at 17:27 to wrap up the victory.
Defenseman Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) paced the Brown lineup with five shots. Seniors Trey Dodd, Brent Beaudoin, Jack Gessert, Giuttari and Nieto were honored before the game for their four years of dedication and commitment to the program.
Brown will close out the regular season at Quinnipiac and Princeton next weekend.
