
Baseball Falls to USC-Upstate in Weekend Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) posted two hits with his first homer of the season, but the Brown baseball team fell at USC-Upstate, 10-5, on Sunday afternoon to close out the four-game weekend at the Upstate/Wofford Invite.

USC-Upstate (6-1) used a four-run third inning to build an early eight-run lead. Brown moved to 1-3 on the young season.

Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) was saddled with the loss on seven earned runs over 2.1 innings. Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Gregory Strickland (Raleigh, N.C.) combined for 5.2 innings with one earned run out of the bullpen. Kevin Davis provided four innings of one-hit relief work to pick up the win for the Spartans.

Lomusico went 2-for-5 at the plate and hit .389 (7-18) with two doubles and three RBIs over the four-game weekend. Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) both hit triples on Sunday.

Lomuscio put the Bears in front with a solo home run in the first inning, but the Spartans scored three times on four hits in the bottom half. The two teams swapped runs in the second frame, before Upstate scored four runs in the third, headlined by Jack Hennessey's three-run triple.

The Bears continued to chip away with one run in the fourth, as Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) drew a leadoff walk and then scored on a groundout, but the Spartans scored again in the fifth for the six-run advantage.

Brown added two more runs in the eighth frame, when Deere hit an RBI triple, and then crossed the plate on an error to round out the scoring.

Upstate edged the Bears in hits, 9-7.

Brown will visit North Carolina to face Sacred Heart, Wake Forrest and La Salle next weekend.
