PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Colin Burston (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) and Cole Quisenberry (Denver, Colo.) all scored to lift the Brown men's hockey team over Colgate, 3-1, in ECAC play Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (7-17-2, 7-10-2 ECAC) completed the season sweep over the Raiders and picked up two points in the conference standings to improve to 2-1-2 over the last five games. Colgate dropped to 10-15-6, 8-8-3.
"I thought we played very well," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We stuck with the process, worked extremely hard and got a really important win. We're trying to catch teams ahead of us and we need to win these hockey games. A good start to the weekend, but I thought we deserved to win."
Brown outshot the Raiders by a 29-26 margin. Defenseman Dorian Dawson (Collingwood, Ontario) added two assists for the multiple-point game. Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 25 saves in the win for the Bears, while Andrew Farrier made 26 stops.
Brown outshot Colgate 7-6 in a scoreless opening period. Nieto made a diving save to deny Ben Sharf two minutes into the period.
Brown opened the scoring 4:26 into the second period. Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) crashed the net and was denied by Farrier, but quickly pushed the puck out to Burston at the point, who blasted a shot through traffic and into the back of the goal.
After a Brown penalty, Dodd padded the lead with an unassisted shorthanded goal midway through the period, as the senior intercepted the puck in defensive end, and then snapped a shot that trickled past Farrier for the two-goal lead.
Colgate answered back with a power-play goal just over one minute later when Paul McAvoy cut the lead in half, 2-1. Brown led in shots, 20-14, after two periods.
The Bears opened the first half of the third period by killing three straight penalties, limiting the Raiders to three shots over six minutes. Quisenberry then scored at 12:55 on a feed from Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) for his fourth of the season to make it a three-goal lead.
Nieto stopped all 12 shots he faced in the third period to help secure the victory. Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and Quisenberry led the way with five shots apiece.
Brown will host No. 2 Cornell Saturday night at 7 PM.
