CANTON, N.Y. – Senior Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) netted the game winner in the third period and Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Brown men's hockey team blanked St. Lawrence, 2-0, in Friday's ECAC contest at Appleton Arena.
Brown (5-15-0, 5-8-0) earned its second straight victory and outshot the Saints, 31-25, to complete the season sweep. SLU dropped to 3-20-3, 1-13-0. Nieto earned his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career, while Francis Boisvert made 29 stops for the Saints.
SLU benefited from a power play with 1:56 remaining, and then pulled Boisvert for the extra skater, but the Bears killed the penalty and Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) netted the empty-net goal to secure the win.
"I thought we played a 60-minute game, and hopefully a step forward for what is a very young team, in terms of being comfortable with a scoreless game on the road and then continuing to play fundamentally-sound hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I'm just really proud of the effort. They played hard from the start of that game until the end."
Brown outshot the Saints 12-11 in a scoreless opening period. SLU killed the only penalty of the period midway through the frame.
The Bears limited the Saints to just five shots in the second frame. Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) nearly put the visitors on top halfway through the period, but Boisvert denied the backhanded attempt to maintain a scoreless game.
Beaudoin scored the eventual game winner on the team's third power play of the night at 13:11 in the third period. After Boisvert turned away consecutive shots from Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and Maloney, Beaudoin converted on the second rebound for his fifth goal of the season.
The Bears then killed a 6-on-4 power play to close the game and Maloney added an unassisted empty netter to secure the win.
Brown went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Ben Taylor (Falmouth, Mass.) led the team with four shots.
The Bears will visit No. 6 Clarkson on Saturday.
