PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Tina Paolillo's (East Haven, Conn.) third period goal and 25 saves from senior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) guided the Brown women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Saint Anselm on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"Calla had another terrific game," said head coach Carisa Zaban Wahlig. "Our penalty kill was great tonight, however, we spent too much time in the box. That needs to change for tomorrow as well as burying our chances."
The teams played through two periods of scoreless hockey before Paolillo put back her own rebound at 11:03 of the third for the game's only goal. Brown (3-15-1) was a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill and Isaac recorded her second shutout of the season with her 25 stops.
After a 0-0 first period, Brown held a 12-7 advantage in shots and came up empty on its one power-play chance. Sophomore Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) had a breakaway late in the period but the Hawks' Kia Castonguay came up with the stop.
Isaac made eight of her 12 saves in the second period while the Bears fought off three penalties, including a 5-on-3. Brown had its own opportunties on the power play with two but Saint Anselm (13-9-2) held the Bears scoreless.
Paolillo's third goal of the season came at 11:03 when she dove and put back her own rebound while senior Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Mel Anderson (Plymouth, Mich.) picked up the assists. Brown then fought off its last penalty at 16:48 to improve to 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Overall, Brown outshot Saint Anselm 28-25. Both teams were shutout on the power-play, with the Bears 0-for-3 and the Hawks 0-for-7. Castonguay finished with 27 saves in the Saint Anselm net.
Brown closes out its series with the Hawks tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 25) at 3:00 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
Video of all Brown women's hockey home contests and all ECAC games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
