Women's Hockey Falls Short Against No. 10 Cornell, 3-1
1/16/2026 8:40:00 PM | Women's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's hockey (11-9-2, 7-6-2 ECAC) battled but came up short in a 3-1 loss to Cornell (12-6-2, 8-4-1 ECAC) in Meehan Auditorium on Friday night (Jan. 16).
Monique Lyons netted her ninth goal of the season for the Bears and Rory Edward finished the game with 25 saves. Both Margot Norehad and Isabella Gratzl picked up assists.
"I am proud of our team for playing a complete game in all three zones," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "Our pace of play put Cornell on their heels and put us on the power play. We generaged quality scoring chances - breakaways, hit some posts, cretated rebounds - the pucks just didn't bounce our way."
Cornell struck first at 7:52 in the first period as McKenna Van Gelder took advantage of a rebound off Edwards and beat Brown's goaltender to make it 1-0.
Under a minute into the second period, Jade Iginla got behind Cornell's defense and had a chance on the breakaway but the shot went just over the crossbar.
A minute later, Cornell took advantage of another rebound as Edwards saved the first shot but Nora Curtis got the puck past Edwards, making it 2-0.
Brown had another great chance with less than five minutes left in the second period. The Bears were on the power play and Norehad fired one from the top of the circle that got by Annalies Bergmann (35 saves) but hit the post and rebounded away.
After a Cornell goal early in the third made it 3-0, Brown finally got on the board on the power play. After Gratzl made a great play to keep the puck in the offensive zone, Norehad fired on net from the slot. A rebound made its way to Lyons who stuffed the puck past Bergmann to make it 3-1.
Brown kept the pressure on Cornell with Norehad having two strong chances in front around eight minutes left but both times had her shot saved.
The Bears pulled Edwards with two minutes left and had a shot to cut the lead to one but Gratzl's shot from the point hit the post, ending Brown's shot at a comeback.
GAME NOTES
Brown will close out the weekend playing host to Colgate on Saturday (Jan. 17) with puck drop set for 3 p.m.
