TROY, N.Y. - The Brown women's hockey team completed the season sweep over RPI on Saturday with a 2-0 victory at Houston Field House. The Bears never trailed after senior Veronica Alois' (Andover, Mass.) first period power-play goal and junior Darby Melia (Marshfield, Mass.) added a score for good measure in the second. Senior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) recorded her second-career shutout with 35 saves in net.
"It was a good bounce back from yesterday's loss," said head coach Carisa Zaban Wahlig. "Calla played great between the pipes and we complimented her well with nice goals, great back checking and some great shot blocks late in the game."
Brown (2-14-1, 2-9-1 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Alois put back a rebound on the power play at 10:46. Senior Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Lizzy Gross (Scarborough, Maine) picked up the assists on the score.
The Bears held a 13-5 advantage in shots for the opening period and were 1-for-1 on the power play in the stanza's only penalty.
RPI (0-24-1, 0-14-0 ECAC) came back to outshoot Brown in the second period, 19-8, but the Isaac would keep the Engineers off the board with 19 saves while Melia increased the Bears' lead to two with a deflection on senior Maybelline Beiring's (Calumet, Mich.) shot at 19:19. Sophomore Tina Paolillo (East Haven, Conn.) also contributed an assist on the play.
Brown was 0-for-2 in the second on the power play and also fought off two infractions.
The teams skated through a scoreless third period as Isaac again came up big with 11 saves while Brown shutdown RPI on the penalty kill, going 1-for-1. Overall, the Bears were 1-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
With her 35 saves, Isaac has nine games with 30 or more stops this season. Amanda Rampado ended the contest with 23 saves in the opposing net.
Brown will next open their season series with Yale on Tuesday, Jan. 21, traveling to New Haven, Conn. for a 7:30 p.m. game.
