
Women’s Hockey Clipped by Yale, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Yale, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Ingalls Rink. The Bulldogs scored the game's opening goal in the first period and added two tallies in the second while the Bears received their goal from junior Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) in the third.
Yale (12-8-0, 9-4-0 ECAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first period while having a two-skater advantage at 4:24 on a goal by Elle Hartje. Brown (2-15-1, 2-10-1 ECAC) was called for the only penalties of the frame with the Bulldogs going 1-for-2 on the power play.
Sophie Veronneau made it 2-0 in favor of the home team at 5:43 of the second and Rebecca Vanstone increased Yale's advantage to three at 17:15. The Bears had their first power-play chances in the stanza but were shutout on both opportunities.
Blumberg put Brown on the board before the end of the game at 19:38 for her first goal of the season when she crashed to the net and beat Courtney DeNaut. Sophomores Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) and Mel Anderson (Plymouth, Mich.) earned the assists.
The Bears pulled senior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) for the remainder of the contest but could not get closer. Isaac ended the night with 41 saves, her fifth game this season with 40 or more saves. She totaled 13 stops in both the first and third period and made 15 saves in the second. Gianna Meloni was credited with the win in the Yale net and had 14 saves while DeNaut made six saves in the last 9:04 of action.
Overall, the Bears would commit just two penalties in the game, both coming in the first, while they were 0-for-3 on their power-play chances. Blumberg led Brown with five shots while Maloney contributed four.
Brown will next host its final non-conference series of the season, welcoming Saint Anselm to Meehan Auditorium on Friday, Jan. 24 (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan. 25 (3:00 p.m.).
