Men’s Hockey Welcomes RPI, Union This Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team will return to ECAC play this weekend when the Bears host Rensselaer and Union at Meehan Auditorium. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Last Time Out
Brown dropped a pair of close games to No. 15 Arizona State at home over the weekend to close out non-conference play. After a 3-1 loss on Saturday, Brown jumped out to a three-goal lead early in the second period on Sunday, scoring three times within a 2:22 span. ASU responded with three unanswered goals and then netted the game winner in overtime to secure the comeback victory and weekend sweep. Brent Beaudoin had two goals over the weekend, while Connor Marshall (1-1-2) and Trey Dodd (0-2-2) also had multiple-point efforts.

Scouting Rensselaer
RPI is 3-1 since the start of 2020, composed of all ECAC games, and most recently topped Colgate on Saturday to move into fourth place in the conference standings. Will Reilly and Patrick Polino pace the Engineers with seven goals apiece as seven players have at least four goals. Reilly also has a team-high 15 points as a defenseman, along with Chase Zieky, who has nine assists. RPI is averaging 2.52 goals per game as a team and is 15.1 percent on the power play. Three different goalies have started at least two games in net for the Engineers this season, led by Owen Savory (5-7-1), who has a 2.68 GAA and a .907 save percentage.

Brown vs. RPI All-Time
Brown and Rensselaer have met 103 times, dating back to a 5-0 Brown win during the 1951-52 season. The Engineers currently lead the all-time series, 64-30-9. Brown dropped a heartbreaker in Troy earlier this season, as the Engineers evened the game with two seconds left in regulation, and then scored in overtime for the 2-1 win. Brown captured five straight wins over RPI before that loss.

Scouting Union
Union is 1-2-1 since the start of the New Year and 1-3-2 over its last six games. The Dutchmen have spread around the offense this season as seven players have between three to four goals, while Anthony Rinaldi leads the group with 12 assists and 16 points. He also has ten points in ECAC play and is one of four players with multiple power-play goals. Union is averaging 1.74 goals per game and is 13.3 percent on the power play. Union owns the third-best penalty kill unit in the conference at 83.3 percent. Darion Hanson has started every game in net and heads into the weekend with a 2.65 GAA and a .911 save percentage with a pair of shutouts.

Brown vs. Union All-Time
Brown and Union will play in the 59th all-time meeting between the two conference foes on Saturday, dating back to a 3-2 Union victory on December 30, 1989. The Bears hold a 25-21-13 series advantage but fell on the road, 5-0, in the first meeting of the season.

Marshall's Breakout Game
Connor Marshall made the most of his second career game as he netted two points in the same period against Arizona State (1/12). The rookie had the primary assist on the opening goal of the game for his first career point and then scored 2:22 later to give the Bears a three-goal lead.

Back-to-Back for Beaudoin
Senior Brent Beaudoin scored in both ends of a weekend series with Arizona State after scoring twice in the previous 15 games. He is the second Brown player to score in back-to-back games this season, along with Bradley Cocca, who found the back of the net in the first two contests.
