PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Sheyenne Allen scored her first career goal, and the Bears posted their fourth consecutive team shutout as Brown University women's soccer topped the University of Hartford, 1-0, on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Continuing their best start since the 2011 season, the Bears (4-0-1) – ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll – scored in the 68th minute to defeat the visiting Hawks (2-4-1) and have not allowed a goal in the last 413:54.
"Getting shutouts and getting results is great, but we do want to be more dangerous up top," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "For us the next step will be problem solving. It's good that our team is getting results, but we still have to look at ourselves and see how we can get better as a team. After every game whether we win, lose, or tie, we are trying to look at ourselves and see how we can get better."
Allen (Bear, Del.) registered her first collegiate points on her game-winning goal, while freshman Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) and sophomore Malina Yago (Culver City, Calif.) registered assists. Seelenfreund tallied her first career assist while Yago recorded her second assist of the season and the fifth of her career.
Through five contests this season, the Brown defense has allowed just one goal (0.20 per game).
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) notched her third consecutive clean sheet behind two saves. She has not permitted a goal over 298 minutes played this season.
Brown's back line of juniors Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.), sophomore Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.), and freshman Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.) helped the Bears post their fourth clean sheet of the year. That back four grouping has played 1,872 of a possible 1,880 combined minutes on the year. Cummings has aided the Bears in registering 15 shutouts since the start of the 2017 season.
On the game's scoring play, Yago played a ball up to Seelenfreund who carried the ball to the end line before sending a cross from the right side into the penalty area where an oncoming Allen slotted the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the six-yard box at the 67:58 mark.
Brown controlled play throughout the match, holding advantages in shots (18-4), shots on goal (10-2), and corner kicks (11-5). Seelenfreund and freshman Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) each compiled a game-high four shots while senior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) totaled three shots – all on goal.
The Bears created several scoring chances over the course of the 90 minutes with Story, Seelenfreund, Raphino, and sophomore Zoe Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) all putting shots on target inside of the first half hour. In the waning moments of the first half, a header from Cummings off a corner from sophomore Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) required a diving save.
Opening the second half, Francisco nearly converted in the 47th minute, forcing a diving save with a shot from just outside the box following a corner kick from Story. Raphino sent a dangerous cross into the mixer in the 56th minute before Allen broke the tie 12 minutes later.
Inside of the final 20 minutes, Thompson registered a save, and the Bears defended a pair of corner kicks to preserve the shutout.
For Hartford, goalie Maia Perez turned aside nine shots.
