PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University men's soccer and Providence College played a scoreless draw for over 76 minutes before the Bears fell to the Friars, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The Bears (1-4-1) stymied the Friars (6-2-0) for much of the night before the hosts – who have allowed just 0.50 goals per game on the year – broke through in the 77th minute to extend their win streak to four games.
"The guys did a great job applying the tactics that we set out for them for this game," Brown head coach Patrick Laughlin said. "We created a few chances, and their goalkeeper made an outstanding save in the first half to keep us off the board. I'm pleased with how our team stayed focused, concentrated, and worked for each other."
Providence's Ramzi Qawasmy scored at the 76:02 mark off an assist from Joao Serrano for the game's only goal.
Brown junior goalkeeper Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) tallied three saves and made several other significant plays within his penalty area.
Brown's back four of seniors Jackson Goebel (Houston, Texas) and Matt Rytel (Pittsburg, Pa.), junior Will Mims (Asheville, N.C.), and freshman Owen Schwartz (Mill Valley, Calif.) helped the Bears' limit the Friars to just the one goal.
Senior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) nearly broke through for the Bears in the 24th minute as he flicked a shot on target from just outside the goal area that required an extended save. Senior Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) and freshman Brady Van Epps (Clifton Park, N.Y.) worked the ball up on the counter.
Van Epps made a critical play to keep the game scoreless in the 39th minute as he dove to clear a header off the line from the Friars off a corner kick.
Providence scored in the 77th minute as Serrano played a long ball up the field that Gross punched away before Qawasmy sent a shot into the back of the net from the edge of the box on the ensuing rebound.
The hosts held advantages in shots (22-3), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kicks (4-1).
For the Friars, goalkeeper Austin Aviza made one save in the shutout.
