SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Brown men's soccer team was defeated by Bryant, 2-1, on Sunday at Bulldog Soccer Field. The Bulldog's benefitted from two first-half goals while the Bears received their score from freshman Brady Van Epps (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in the second half, his first collegiate goal.
"We did not start well and paid the price for it in the first half," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "The team played well in the second half but lacked the crucial finishing touch. We will learn from this as we go forward."
George Gill broke the scoreless contest for Bryant (3-3-0) at 17:41 of the first on a header off of a corner while Alex DaCosta increased the Bulldog lead to two with his tally at 24:47. Bryant held the advantage in both shots (8-3) and corners (3-0) for the opening stanza.
Brown (1-3-1) regrouped for the second half and ended up outshooting Bryant by a heavy 12-4 margin. The Bears inched closer as Van Epps picked up his first career goal following a rebound from senior Matthew Chow's (Vancouver, British Columbia) shot.
The Bears landed two more shots on goal, one from Van Epps and the other from senior Jackson Goebel (Houston, Texas) as time was running down but the Bulldogs would hold on for the victory.
In addition to outshooting Bryant in the second, Brown had a 6-1 advantage in corners but could not convert.
Sophomore James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) concluded the game with two saves, all coming in the first half, as junior Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) was not tested in the second as the Bears' defense limited the Bulldogs.
Brown will open next week's slate of games at Providence on Wednesday, Sept. 25 (7:00 p.m.) before hosting San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 29 (2:00 p.m.).
