Johnson scores game winner, Swomley with four saves in shutout
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Malcolm Johnson (Wilmington, Del.) came off the bench to score the game winner and James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) posted his first shutout of the season as the Brown men's soccer team topped Howard, 1-0, Thursday afternoon at Greene Stadium.
Brown (1-1-0) outshot the Bison by a 12-8 margin. Howard dropped to 0-3-0 overall. Swomley made four of the team's six saves to earn his third career shutout and first of the 2019 campaign. Carlos Caro registered seven saves for the Bison.
"It was good to get our first win of the season at Howard in an extremely difficult heat situation," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "We played some good soccer and fought hard when necessary. I'm happy for the team to bounce back from last week."
The Bears recorded five shots in a scoreless opening half, including two from Johnson and Alex Mina (Aldie, Va.) that were turned away by Caro to keep the visitors off the board.
Johnson scored his first goal of the season at 69:13, when he took advantage of a rebound in the box and buried a shot past Caro. John Vrablic (Avon, Ohio) picked up an assist on the play for his first point of the season.
Howard picked up the pace offensively during the closing 20 minutes of the contest, but the Brown backline stepped up with a pair of team saves, and Swomley added three stops down the stretch to secure the shutout.
Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) paced the Brown lineup with four shots, one of three players with multiple shots. The Bears led the way in corner kicks, 6-4.
Brown will continue its trip to the nation's capital on Saturday when the team visits George Washington at 3 PM. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
