Women’s Soccer Hosts UMass Thursday on NESN+/ESPN+ to Open Home Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer hosts the University of Massachusetts on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6:00 p.m. (NESN+/ESPN+) at Stevenson-Pincince Field to kick off a home weekend that will also see the Bears welcome No. 13 UCF to Providence on Sunday, Sept. 6 at noon (ESPN+).

Scouting the Bears (2-2-0)

As a team in the NCAA rankings, Brown stands 13^th in corner kicks per game (8.75). In the Ivy League rankings, the Bears sit second in corner kicks (35) and third in goals (five).
Senior Angelina Vargas has tallied four points, two goals, and two game-winning goals on the season, depositing each of the Bears' game-winners on the year. She ranks first in the Ivy League and eighth in the NCAA in game-winning goals (two). Vargas netted the game-winner against both New Haven (Aug. 20) and UConn (Aug. 27).
Senior Joy Okonye earned a spot on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List announced on Aug. 26. A two-time First Team All-Ivy selection and the 2025 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, Okonye has totaled 32 career points behind eight goals and 16 assists over 55 career games played and 52 starts. Her 16 career assists rank 11^th in program history.
Senior goalkeeper Gurleen Toor and sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter have split time in goal for the Bears this season. Toor has played 217 minutes with a 0.83 GAA while Etter has played 143 minutes on the year.
In its second home match of 2026, Brown captured a 1-0 win over UConn on Aug. 27 as Angelina Vargas scored her second game-winning goal in as many home matches, and the Bears notched their second clean sheet as a team on the season.
In Brown's season and home opener, senior Angelina Vargas, junior Kyra Treanor, and first-years Taylor Green and Georgia Steinbach each scored a goal as the Bears earned a 4-0 victory over the University of New Haven on Aug. 20 at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (98 points, two first-place votes) took the No. 3 spot in the 2026 Ivy League Women's Soccer Preseason Poll behind first-place Princeton (120 points, 10 first-place votes) and second-place Dartmouth (109 points, four first-place votes).
Now in her 11^th season at Brown, Kia McNeill, the Messing Family Head Coach for Brown Varsity Women's Soccer, has posted a 97-36-23 overall record alongside a 42-12-8 Ivy League mark.

Scouting the Minutewomen (3-0-0)

UMass has posted a 3-0-0 record to open the season with victories over St. John's (2-1) NJIT (1-0), and Harvard (4-3).
Monica Curry leads the team with six points behind two goals and two assists. Overall, six different Minutewomen have scored at least one goal on the year.
Leah Nisenfeld has played all 270 minutes in goal, posting a 1.33 GAA and .750 save percentage.
In 2025, Massachusetts went 5-8-4 overall with a 3-6-2 mark in MAC play.

History

Brown has posted an 8-12-2 all-time record against UMass.
The Bears have notched a 4-1-1 mark against the Minutewomen over the last six meetings.
In the last meeting on Sept. 14, 2017, Brown earned a 2-0 win at Rudd Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.
