PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball fell to Boston University, 6-0, in its home finale on Wednesday at the Brown Softball Field but supported a greater cause with its Childhood Cancer Awareness Game.
The Bears hosted their Childhood Cancer Awareness Game as Brown supports the Rally Foundation and its mission to end childhood cancer. In March of this year, Brown freshman Madeline Charles (Filmore, Calif.) lost her 16-year-old cousin, Patrick Graham, to Burkett's Lymphoma. On Wednesday, the Bears played in honor of Patrick and all children battling cancer. Patrick's mother, Stacy Graham, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the contest. Fans can learn more about the cause and donate at fundraise.rallyfoundation.org/BrownSB2019.
"We played for something much bigger than softball today, and our hearts go out to Madeline, Stacy, and their entire family," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We were honored to remember Patrick today, and we really appreciate the support that BU showed for the cause."
The Bears (11-25) did not allow more than two runs in any one inning, but the Terriers (33-17) – the top team in the Patriot League standings – gave up just one hit and four walks in the shutout.
Senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) hit a double to right field in the bottom of the sixth while sophomore Katie O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) worked two walks.
Freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) pitched 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits. Junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw 4.0 innings in the start, permitting five runs on nine hits with a strikeout.
BU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Alexa Ponce hit a two-run double to left field.
In the bottom of the first, the Bears placed runners on first and second with walks from sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) and O'Leary before BU escaped the jam.
Ponce extended the visitors lead to 4-0 in the top of the third as she hit a two-run home run.
The Bears again put runners on first and second in the bottom of the third behind a pair of walks from junior Sarah Fringer (Macomb Township, Mich.) and O'Leary before the Terriers recorded the inning's third out.
BU took a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to right field from Madi Killebrew and scored the game's final run in the top of the sixth behind an RBI single up the middle from Alex Heinen.
BU's Emily Gant earned the win (11-7), giving up just one hit and four walks with four strikeouts. Ali Dubois completed the shutout with an inning of hitless relief.
Next, Brown closes the season with a three-game series at Columbia with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 starting at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, May 5 at 12:30 p.m.
