NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sophomore Madi Cranford hit her fifth home run of the season, and senior Cat Seitz notched her league-high 13th double of the year, but Brown University softball fell to Columbia University in six innings, 11-2, on Friday afternoon at the Columbia Softball Stadium.
In the opening game of a three-game Ivy League series, the Bears (11-26, 4-15 Ivy) took a 1-0 lead into the third inning before the host Lions (23-18, 14-5 Ivy) – a team that has already clinched a berth in the Ivy League Playoff Series – tallied four runs in the third, four runs in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth.
"Give credit to Columbia for putting some good swings on the ball today," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We'll look to re-group quickly for tomorrow's doubleheader."
Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) posted her fifth homer of the year – and of her career – with a solo shot in the top of the sixth. Seitz (Poway, Calif.) registered her 13th double of the year, tying for the fifth-most in a single season in program history. Senior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) added a hit.
Seitz led off the top of the first with a double before junior Sarah Fringer (Macomb Township, Mich.) moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Seitz came home later in the inning on an error to push the Bears ahead 1-0.
Columbia scored four runs in the bottom of the third, including two unearned runs. A two-run triple to right center from Max Ortega highlighted the inning for the Lions. The hosts moved ahead 8-1 in the top of the fifth as Amanda Nishihara hit a grand slam to left field.
Cranford brought Brown within 8-2 in the top of the sixth with her solo shot to left field.
The Lions closed the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth behind a solo home run from Ortega and a two-run homer from Alexandra Yule.
Columbia's Madison Canby earned the win (10-7), tossing a complete-game 6.0 innings and allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits with two strikeouts.
Next, Brown closes the season with a doubleheader against Columbia tomorrow, Saturday, May 4, starting at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+). The weekend series was moved to a Friday-Saturday format due to the weather forecast on Sunday.
