PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Lauren Innerst and junior Emily Waters combined to allow just two runs, but Brown University softball fell to Dartmouth College, 2-0, in the final contest of a three-game Ivy League series on Sunday morning at the Brown Softball Field.
With the Bears (11-24, 4-14 Ivy) celebrating Senior Day, seniors accounted for all three of the hosts' hits, but the Big Green (10-26, 7-11 Ivy) scored one run in each of the first and seventh innings to take the win.
"We got great pitching all weekend, and Lauren and Emily gave us a chance to win today," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We almost tied it up in the sixth, but today was still a great day to celebrate our seniors and all that they have meant to our program over the last four years."
Prior the game, Brown recognized the five members of its senior class – Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas), Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.), Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.), and Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) – for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.
Lotz, Scarangella, and Venegas each posted a hit in the contest with Venegas recording her fourth double of the season.
Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) threw 4.1 innings, permitting one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Waters (Northridge, Calif.) tossed 2.2 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits with a strikeout.
The Big Green plated the game's initial run in the top of the first as Taylor Ward drove a solo home run to left field.
Brown threatened to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Venegas led off the inning with a double down the right field line. With one out, Wimmer – making her first plate appearance of the season due to injury – then hit a long fly ball to left field that moved Venegas to third before the Big Green escaped the jam.
Dartmouth tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Ward hit an RBI single to center field to score Morgan Ebow.
The Big Green's Heather Turner earned the win (3-4), pitching 5.0 innings in the start and not giving up a run on three hits. Brooke Plonka garnered her third save of the season, completing the shutout with 2.0 innings of relief without conceding a hit and tallying three strikeouts.
First pitch for the contest was moved up to 9:00 a.m. due to the weather forecast.
Next, Brown plays in its home finale against Boston University on Wednesday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. in its Childhood Cancer Awareness Game before closing the season with a three-game series at Columbia with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 starting at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, May 5 at 12:30 p.m.
