Â
Brown moved to 8-18 overall and Bryant improved to 21-11 after the third and final meeting between the intrastate rivals this season.
Â
"It wasn't our cleanest game, but for the most part we played well enough to win," said head coach Grant Achilles. "We still saw a lot of positives today and we will build on them the next few days as we prepare for a quality Dartmouth team. Bryant definitely deserves credit for the way they battled back in the ninth." Â Â
Â
Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, N.Y.) had two hits with three runs scored. Garett Delano (Callahan Fla.) also posted two hits and Frank Caprio (Providence, R.I.) drove home two runs.
Â
Jack Ipsen collected the win for the Bulldogs in relief and Nathan Wrighter earned the save. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) was saddled with the loss for the Bears. Zach Fogell (Cumberland, R.I.) had four strikeouts in two innings for a no decision as the starter.
Â
Rookie Charlie Beilenson (Los Angeles, Calif.) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Ryan Kuntz (Minneapolis, Minn.), Joshua Wilder (San Marcos, Texas) and Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) combined for three scoreless frames in relief.
Â
After Bryant scored twice in the second, Brown cut the deficit in half when Sluys answered with a solo shot to left field for his team-high fifth homer of the season. The Bears kept it going with three runs on two hits in the fourth inning, as Ciufo hit a two-run double with two outs, and then crossed the plate on a throwing error.
Â
Brown tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning, starting when Delano knocked in a run with a single to left field. Caprio scored two more runs with two outs on a double down the right field line for the five-run lead.
Â
Bryant started the comeback with three runs in the seventh inning, and then scored six times in the top of the ninth, as Nick Angelini broke the tie game with a grand slam to left field. Brown loaded the bases in the bottom half, but Wrighter came in from the bullpen to earn the save.
Â
Brown heads into the weekend with a four-game win streak in Ivy League play as the Bears host Dartmouth in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 11:30 AM.
