GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Ashli Lotz went 3-for-4, freshman Madeline Charles hit her first career home run, and junior Emily Waters pitched a complete game as Brown University softball defeated Alabama A&M University, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
The Bears (4-3) plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth, one run in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth to upend the Bulldogs (10-8) and improve to 3-0 at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational.
"It was great to get our third win for the weekend," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "Emily pitched a great game, and we got some key contributions at the plate. We're looking forward to closing out the tournament tomorrow."
Lotz (Austin, Texas) finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run while Charles (Fillmore, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a run, and a walk. Cranford has tallied a .788 batting average and .833 on-base percentage on the season.
In the circle, Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw a complete-game 7.0 innings – her second complete game of the year – allowing just two runs – one earned – while scattering five hits and three walks.
After the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, neither team scored until the bottom of the fourth when Charles lifted her first career home run to left field, giving the Bears a 2-1 edge.
Brown extended its lead to 3-1 in the last of the fifth as Lotz sent an RBI single up the middle to score sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.).
The Bears extended their advantage to 7-1 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) started the scoring with an RBI on a ground ball before Cranford hit a two-run double to center field. Lotz closed the inning's scoring with an RBI single to left field to plate Cranford.
Alabama A&M scored once in the top of the seventh before Waters closed the game.
Next, Brown concludes play at the tournament against Rider tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 10, at 9:30 a.m.
