
Softball Falls to Colgate, 2-1, La Salle, 9-6, at USF Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Brown University softball dropped decisions to Colgate University, 2-1, and La Salle University, 9-6, in its first day of competition at the University of South Florida Invitational on Friday at the E.C. Moore Softball Complex.
The Bears (4-5) stood tied 1-1 with the Raiders (9-11) through four innings before falling in their first game of the day and remained within 5-4 of the Explorers (3-9) through six innings prior to the setback.
"We are dealing with a few injuries right now, but we still have three more opportunities this weekend to make our mark down here in Florida before we begin our final preparations for Ivy League play," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said.
Seniors Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) and Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) each posted two hits against La Salle while sophomore Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) did not allow an earned run over 4.0 innings in the start against Colgate.
Next, Brown continues play at the USF Invitational with match-ups against Lafayette (Mar. 16, 9:00 a.m.), Monmouth (Mar. 16, 11:30 a.m.), and LIU Brooklyn (Mar. 17, 11:15 a.m.).
Game 1: Colgate 2, Brown 1
Sophomore Grace Ladd and freshman Lauren Innerst combined to allow just one earned run, but Brown fell to Colgate, 2-1, in its first game of the tournament on Friday morning.
The Bears and Raiders each scored once in the second inning before Colgate went ahead 2-1 with a run in the top of the fifth.
Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) did not allow an earned run over 4.0 innings in the start with one strikeout while Innerst (San Jose Calif.) permitted just one run with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings of relief in the setback (1-1).
Senior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) and freshman Elayna Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.) each posted one hit for the Bears while senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) walked twice.
Each team scored an unearned run in the second inning with sophomore Katie O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) coming home on a passed ball to account for the Bears' run in the frame.
Colgate took its 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth as Morgan Farrah hit an RBI single to left center to score Mia Guevarra.
The Raiders' Bella Crow threw a complete game in the win (5-4), striking out two over 7.0 innings.
Game 2: La Salle 9, Brown 6
Seniors Cat Seitz and Ashli Lotz and sophomore Madi Cranford posted two hits apiece, but Brown dropped a 9-6 decision to La Salle in its second game of the day on Friday afternoon.
The Bears led 4-2 through three innings before the Explorers struck for two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four in the seventh to pull ahead.
Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs, Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Lotz (Austin, Texas) notched a 2-for-4 effort. Freshman Madeline Charles (Filmore, Calif.) registered two RBIs.
Brown tied the game at 1-1 in the last of the second as sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) sent an RBI single down the right field line.
The Bears pulled ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the third behind an RBI single to left field from Seitz and a two-run single to center field from Charles.
The Explorers countered with seven straight runs, moving ahead 9-4 entering the last of the seventh. In the final frame, Brown posted a pair of runs as Seitz hit an RBI single and Cranford scored on a passed ball.
La Salle's Morgan Orlowski hurled a complete-game 7.0 innings, permitting six runs – four earned – on 10 hits with seven strikeouts. Natalie Rios finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs for the Explorers.
Junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 6.2 innings in the start, striking out three and taking the loss (2-3).
