
Softball Sweeps Past Rider, 2-0, North Carolina A&T, 5-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Madi Cranford went 5-for-7 with her first career home run, freshman Lauren Innerst allowed just two runs over 9.0 innings, and Brown University softball swept past Rider University, 3-0, and North Carolina A&T, 5-2, on Friday at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
Playing in their first two games at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational, the Bears (3-3) blanked the Broncs (0-10) in their opener at the tournament and never trailed against the host Aggies (2-12) in game two.
"We played two really solid games today with our lineup and pitchers both making important contributions," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "Madi Cranford continues to swing a really hot bat, and Lauren Innerst did a terrific job in the circle in her first two career appearances."
Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) finished 5-for-7 on the day with a home run, triple, three runs, and two RBIs. She is now hitting .800 on the season (12-for-15). Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) threw 9.0 innings in her first two career appearances, earning the save in game one and the win in game two, while allowing just two runs with seven strikeouts.
Next, Brown continues play at the tournament with match-ups against Alabama A&M on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 2:30 p.m. and Rider on Sunday, Mar. 10 at 9:30 a.m.
Game 1: Brown 2, Rider 0
Sophomore Grace Ladd garnered the win in the circle and drove in both of the Bears' runs as Brown shutout Rider, 2-0, in its first game of the day on Friday morning.
The Bears plated one run in the bottom of the first and one run in the last of the fourth to earn the win.
Freshman Madeline Charles (Filmore, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a run, sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) finished 1-for-3 with a run, and Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) tallied two RBIs.
Ladd picked up the win (1-1), throwing 5.0 innings and giving up just three hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) registered her first career save, pitching 2.0 innings and permitting one hit with three strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second, Ladd sent a single to center field, scoring Cranford and giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. In the last of the fourth, Ladd drove a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Charles and staking Brown to its 2-0 edge.
Game 2: Brown 5, North Carolina A&T 2
Sophomore Madi Cranford went 4-for-4 with a homer and triple, and senior Ashli Lotz posted a 3-for-4 effort as Brown topped North Carolina A&T, 5-2, on Friday afternoon in its second game of the day.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead after the first inning and extended their margin to 5-1 with three runs in the top of the seventh before the Aggies scored once in the bottom of the final frame.
Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) finished the contest 4-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, her first career home run, and second career triple. Lotz (Austin, Texas) registered a 3-for-4 effort with a run and a triple. Sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) tallied a hit, a run, an RBI, and a double.
