ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Madi Cranford hit her second home run of the series, and freshman Lauren Innerst went 3-for-3 at the plate, while pitching a complete game, but Brown University softball fell at Cornell University, 5-4, on Monday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Softball Field.
In the series finale of their first Ivy League set of the year, the Bears (6-10, 1-2 Ivy) outhit the Big Red (3-14, 2-1 Ivy), 12-4, and held a 3-1 lead after the top of the fifth, but the hosts scored four runs over the fifth and sixth frames to pull out the win in the rubber game.
"We lost two close games this weekend but got a sense of how competitive Ivy League games are," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We'll look to clean up a few things in our doubleheader against Quinnipiac tomorrow and then turn our full attention to next weekend's series at Harvard."
Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) tossed her fourth complete game of the season, going 6.0 innings and allowing five runs – just two earned – on four hits with three strikeouts to one walk. At the plate, she finished 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run.
Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) notched her third home run of the season and second in as many games, closing the game 2-for-4. Sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) posted a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI, and senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) scored two runs.
Cranford opened the game's scoring in the top of the third as she lifted a solo home run to left field. Innerst followed with a sacrifice fly later in the frame to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
After Cornell pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Schmitz extended Brown's margin to 3-1 in the top of the fifth as she sent a single up the middle to plate Innerst.
The Big Red took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Allison Kerce drove a three-run home run to left field.
Brown tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth as Innerst scored Lotz with a double. Cornell scored the go-ahead run in the last of the sixth as Hanna Crist hit an RBI single to center field.
For Cornell, Katie Lew earned the win (1-7), hurling 3.0 innings in relief and giving up two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts. Kerce finished the game with four RBIs.
Next, Brown plays at Quinnipiac tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 26, in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. before returning to Ivy League play with a three-game series at Harvard with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 30 starting at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Mar. 31 at 12:30 p.m.
