
Scarangella Powers Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of Quinnipiac, 4-2, 6-2

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Annie Scarangella totaled four hits and five RBIs on the day as Brown University softball swept a doubleheader over Quinnipiac University, 4-2 and 6-2, on Tuesday afternoon at QU Softball Field.
The Bears (8-10) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth in game one and plated four runs in the top of the third in game two to propel themselves to a pair of non-conference victories over the host Bobcats (5-18).
"Annie Scarangella had some key hits today, and all three of our pitchers did a nice job of keeping Quinnipiac out of big innings," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "Overall, today was a great way to build some positive momentum heading into this weekend's series at Harvard."
Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBIs, two runs, a triple, and a double. She went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a triple in game two alone. In the circle, junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.), sophomore Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.), and freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) combined to allow just three earned runs over 14.0 innings (1.50 ERA).
Next, Brown returns to Ivy League play with a three-game series at Harvard, comprising a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 30 starting at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, Mar. 31 at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+).
Game 1: Brown 4, Quinnipiac 2
Sophomore Grace Ladd and freshman Lauren Innerst combined to allow just one earned run, and four different Bears drove in runs as Brown topped Quinnipiac in game one, 4-2.
With the score tied at 1-1 through five innings, the Bears plated two runs in the top of the sixth and added a run in the top of the seventh to emerge with the victory.
Senior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) went 1-for-2 with two runs and a double while sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) posted a 1-for-2 effort with an RBI and a walk.
Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) pitched 3.0 innings in the start, giving up one run with one strikeout while Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) hurled 4.0 innings in relief, permitting one run with three strikeouts. Each of them posted an RBI at the plate in the help of their own cause.
After the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Rebecca Drake in the bottom of the first, the Bears tied the score at 1-1 behind an RBI single from Venegas in the top of the third.
Following two scoreless frames, Innerst brought home a run with a walk and Ladd plated a run with a ground ball to push Brown ahead 3-1 in the away half of the sixth.
Quinnipiac trimmed the margin to 3-2 in the last of the sixth, but the Bears responded with a run in the top of the seventh as Schmitz plated Scarangella with a ground ball.
The Bobcats' Kendall Brundrett took the loss (1-11), tossing 6.0 innings in the start and conceding three runs on four hits.
Game 2: Brown 6, Quinnipiac 2

The Bears struck for four runs in the top of the third – including a bases-clearing single from Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) – and added a two-run triple from Scarangella in the top of the fifth to upend the host Bobcats.
Scarangella paced the Brown offense with her 3-for-3 effort, five RBIs, and her second career triple while freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) posted two runs and a double. Senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) scored two runs, and senior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) and sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each registered a hit and a run.
Junior pitcher Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) hurled 6.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Innerst did not give up a run in a scoreless inning of relief to close the game.
