ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Karina Chavarria went 4-for-7, and senior Cat Seitz and sophomore Madi Cranford each hit a home run as Brown University softball split a doubleheader with Cornell University, winning 10-8 in eight innings in game one and falling 4-3 in game two, on Sunday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Softball Field.
Competing in their first Ivy League games of the season, the Bears (6-9, 1-1 Ivy) rallied from a 6-0 deficit in game one to earn the victory in extra innings before the host Big Red (2-14, 1-1 Ivy) took a walk-off win in game two with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
"I was happy with the way we responded in game one to be able to come back and win our Ivy opener in extra innings," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "In game two, it's always tough to lose on a walk-off hit, but we know that every Ivy League game will be a battle to the last out. A big part of this game is being able to bounce back quickly, and we'll look to do that tomorrow."
Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs, three runs, and a triple. Seitz (Poway, Calif.) hit her third home run of the season and the 10th of her career, going 3-for-8 with three runs on the day, and Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) registered her second homer of the year.
Next, Brown concludes the three-game series with Cornell tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 25, at 2:00 p.m. The series was originally scheduled for a Saturday-Sunday format but was moved back one day due to weather.
