Homza, Ciufo both hit home runs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) both hit home runs, but the Brown baseball team fell to Yale, 15-3, in the first game of a three-game series to open Ivy League play Saturday at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.

Brown (3-12, 0-1) and Yale (7-10, 1-0) combined for five home runs on a windy afternoon, while the Bears had nine hits. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday to wrap up the series.

Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.), Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) and Frank Caprio (Providence, R.I.) led the Bears with two hits apiece. Lomuscio posted his eighth multiple-hit game of the season and Homza also drove in two runs.

Scott Politz went seven innings for the Bulldogs as he allowed three runs with seven strikeouts and one walk. Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) was handed the loss for the Bears in 3.1 innings of work.

"We came out of the gates swinging but Politz did a nice job to keep us at bay the rest of his outing," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Garett didn't have his best stuff or usual command, and they capitalized on that along with elevating some balls into the wind. Tomorrow is a new day for us to come out and play to our capabilities."

Homza gave the Bears an early lead when he belted a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the first. Yale came back with five runs on three hits in the second inning, led by Harry Hegeman with a three-run triple, but the Bears got one run back in the bottom half when Ciufo launched a solo homer over the left field fence to cut the lead to three, 5-3.

Yale scored eight runs over the next three innings, including six runs in the fourth, headlined by Jake Gehri with a grand slam before Brian Ronai added a two-run home run.

After the Bulldogs added two more runs in the eighth, the Bears had two hits in the ninth to load the bases, but Quinn Cleary came up with the final fly out to end the game.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11:30 AM.
