PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) scored the lone goal for the Brown men's hockey team as the Bears fell to Princeton, 5-1, in Saturday's ECAC contest and regular season finale at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown (11-13-5, 8-9-5 ECAC), the No. 8 seed, will play host to ninth-seeded Princeton in the best-of-three first round of the ECAC Tournament next weekend, starting on Friday, March 9 at 7 PM.
Max Veronneau led Princeton (10-16-3, 8-12-2) with two goals in the game. Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 24 saves in the loss for the Bears, before giving way to Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.), who stopped five shots. Jeremie Forget made 32 saves for the Tigers.
"We just got away from our identity and it was not Brown hockey this weekend," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We'll be ready to go on Friday but we need to be better from the start."
The two teams played a scoreless opening period as Kania made 12 stops in the stanza.
Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) was awarded a penalty shot early in the second period, as he was hooked during a charge to the net, but Forget came up with a stop on the attempt to keep the game scoreless.
Jake Paganelli opened the scoring at 11:48 in the middle frame when he redirected a shot by Matthew Thom past Kania for the one-goal lead. Veronneau added a power-play goal with 40 seconds remaining in the period to give the Tigers a two-goal lead heading into the final frame.
Mark Paolini and Corey Andonovski scored back-to-back goals within a 32-second span to open the first two minutes of the third period, both during 4-on-4 play, as the Tigers expanded their lead to four goals.
Giuttari put the Bears on the board with a power-play goal at 12:00 as he blasted a one timer from Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) into the back of the net for his seventh tally of the season. Defenseman Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) also earned an assist.
Veronneau added an empty-net goal at 18:35 to seal the win for the visitors.
