
Softball Defeats Lafayette, 11-3, Falls to Monmouth, 6-2

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Three Bears hit .500 or better on the day as Brown University softball defeated Lafayette College, 11-3, and fell to Monmouth University, 6-2, at the University of South Florida Invitational on Saturday at the E.C. Moore Softball Complex.
The Bears (5-6) gained an 8-2 lead through four innings on their way to the win over the Leopards (2-13) and remained tied 2-2 with the Hawks (10-7), heading to the seventh inning before Monmouth rallied to take the decision.
"We had five different players have multi-hit games against Lafayette, and Lauren Innerst pitched a solid game in game one," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We were a bit unlucky in game two, but we'll look to finish the weekend strong against LIU Brooklyn tomorrow."
Between the two games, junior Rebecca Mandelbaum (Livingston, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a double, senior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished 4-for-7 with three runs and a double, and senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) posted a 4-for-8 day with three RBIs. Against Lafayette, freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) threw her second complete game of the year.
Next, Brown concludes play at the USF Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 17, against LIU Brooklyn at 11:15 a.m.
Game 1: Brown 11, Lafayette 3
Five different Bears posted multiple hits, and freshman Lauren Innerst pitched a complete game as Brown beat Lafayette, 11-3, on Saturday morning in its first game of the day and third contest at the tournament.
The Bears pulled ahead 8-2 through four innings and added three more runs in the top of the seventh en route to their victory over the Leopards.
Senior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with three runs, a double, and an RBI, senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run, and sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) posted a 3-for-5 effort with three runs, a double, and an RBI.
Junior Rebecca Mandelbaum (Livingston, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, and senior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) registered two hits, a double, and a run.
Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) tossed a complete-game 7.0 innings, permitting three runs on eight hits with a strikeout in the win (2-1).
In the top of the first, Seitz and Lotz each hit RBI singles to put Brown ahead 2-0 before Scarangella scored on an error to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Cranford came home on an error in the top of the second to make the score 4-0.
After Lafayette pulled within 4-2, the Bears answered with two runs in the top of the third as Mandelbaum hit a two-run single to right field. Brown moved ahead 8-2 in the away half of the fourth as Lotz and Seitz both scored on an error.
In the top of the seventh, Cranford hit an RBI double to right center, and Lotz sent a two-run single into center field to give the Bears insurance.
Game 2: Monmouth 6, Brown 2

The Bears moved ahead 2-0 on the single from Mandelbaum (Livingston, N.J.), but the Hawks answered with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the seventh to earn the comeback win.
Mandelbaum, seniors Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas), and Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.), and sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) each notched one hit. Senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) walked twice.
In the bottom of the second, Mandelbaum staked Brown to a 2-0 edge as she sent a two-run single into right field to score Chavarria and Venegas.
Monmouth knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth as Amber Wozniak hit a solo home run, and Deangie Jimenez sent an RBI single to left field.
In the top of the seventh, Sam Tomasetti drove a ball to left field that plated three runs before Jasmine Higa hit a sacrifice fly to push the Hawks ahead 6-2.
For Monmouth, Lilly Robles tossed 5.1 innings in the start, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Alyssa Irons earned the win (9-4), tossing 1.2 innings in relief with one strikeout.
Junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 6.0 innings in the start, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts in the loss (2-4).
