CLEARWATER, Fla. – Sophomore pitcher Grace Ladd struck out eight batters, but Brown University softball fell to LIU Brooklyn, 2-1, on Sunday morning at the E.C. Moore Softball Complex in its fifth and final game at the University of South Florida Invitational.
The Bears (5-7) and Blackbirds (15-11) stood tied 1-1 before LIU Brooklyn's Camryn Lyman hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
"Grace Ladd threw a tremendous game today and gave us an opportunity to win," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We have grown tremendously since our first weekend and even over the last few days are a much better team than when we arrived in Florida on Thursday."
Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) tossed 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs, both earned, on five hits with eight strikeouts to just two walks in the setback (1-2).
Senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a run while sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) posted a hit and an RBI. Senior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) and junior Rebecca Mandelbaum (Livingston, N.J.) each added a hit.
The Blackbirds gained a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, executing a double steal as Kiana Cisneros took second and Schae Dickson stole home.
Brown answered with a run in the top of the fifth, knotting the score at 1-1. Venegas set the table with a single down the left field line before Mandelbaum moved her to second with a ground out. Chavarria followed with an RBI single to left center to plate Venegas.
In the last of the seventh, Ladd recorded two outs before the Blackbirds loaded the bases for Lyman who sent the game-winning RBI single into center field.
LIU Brooklyn's Elena Valenzuela earned the win (8-3), hurling 7.0 innings and giving up one run on five hits with one strikeout.
Next, Brown plays at the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at 4:45 p.m. in its first game of the year in the Northeast before opening Ivy League play at Cornell University with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 23 at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, Mar. 24 at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+).
