PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Fairfield, 7-6 and 13-8, on Saturday at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium.
Â
Brown (2-11) totaled 20 hits in the doubleheader, highlighted by two home runs, while Fairfield improved to 4-9 on the season.
"If we extend the lead just a bit more in both games, and manage an extra shut down inning, it's a much different day," said head coach Grant Achilles. "We showed flashes of greatness, and just need the consistency to be there across the board. Today's process is more important than its outcome, and we will be a better team tomorrow because of it."
Â
Game 1: Fairfield 7, Brown 6 (7 Innings)
Brown outhit Fairfield by a 14-9 margin in the first game, but the Stags scored seven runs in the final two frames to earn the comeback win.
Â
Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) went 3-for-4 as one of five Bears with multiple hits, as Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska), Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.), Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) and Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) all had two hits apiece. Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) hit his second home run of the series and drove in three runs.
Â
Delano took the mound as the starter and went 5.2 innings with one earned run and three strikeouts. Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) took the loss in relief and Peter Horn earned the win for the Stags out of the bullpen with one hit allowed over three innings.
Â
Brown scored twice in the second inning when Farris crossed the plate on a groundout and Homza hit an RBI single to center. Ciufo followed with three-run homer in the third inning, his second home run in as many games, to give the Bears a five-run advantage.
Â
Delano gave the Bears a six-run lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, but Fairfield came back with four runs in the sixth, as the Stags used four hits and took advantage of two Brown errors to pull within two runs.
Â
Giacomo Brancato hit a two-run triple with two outs in the top of the seventh to push the Stags in front by one run. Brown had a runner in scoring position in the bottom half as Farris hit a two-out double, but Nick Grabek ended the inning with a strikeout to secure the save.
Â
Game 2: Fairfield 13, Brown 8
Farris and Homza drove in two runs apiece in the second game, while Homza also added a home run, and Lomuscio and Delano each scored two runs.
Â
Eli Oliphant picked up the win for the Stags behind six earned runs in five innings of work, while Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) was handed the loss in six innings as the starter.
Â
Brown jumped out to an early lead, starting with two runs in the first inning, when Homza launched a two-run homer to right center. The Bears added four more runs on three hits in the second. Frank Caprio (Providence, R.I.) drove home Delano on a bunt single before Lomuscio hit an RBI double to left field. Farris followed with a two-run single for the six-run lead.
Â
Fairfield used a three-run third inning to cut the Brown lead in half, 6-3. After two scoreless frames, the Stags added four runs in the sixth to take the lead, and then scored six tallies over the next two frames to move out in front by seven.
Â
