HANOVER, N.H. – Seniors Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) and Brady Schoo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) both scored and Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) stopped all 30 shots he faced as the Brown men's hockey team blanked Dartmouth, 2-0, in ECAC action Saturday night at Thompson Arena.
Brown (11-11-5, 8-7-5 ECAC) swept the season series against the Big Green and improved to 5-2-2 over the last nine games. Dartmouth moved to 10-13-4, 9-8-3.
Kania, who earned his first shutout of the season and second of his career, recorded a 30-plus save effort for the sixth time this season. Adrian Clarke had 23 stops for the Big Green. Marchin also added an assist for two points.
"The guys played very good hockey," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We just played Brown hockey, with tenacity, work and pace. We needed those two points and moving into the final weekend those two points were big."
Brown outshot the Big Green in a scoreless opening period, 11-8, as both teams killed a penalty in the frame.
Marchin opened the scoring for the Bears at 8:42 of the second period for the team's third power-play goal of the weekend. Tristan Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) sent a pass to the left circle and Marchin converted the one timer for his team-high eighth tally of the season. Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) also picked up an assist.
Kania made 12 stops in the middle frame to preserve the one-goal advantage heading into the final 20 minutes.
Schoo gave the Bears a two-goal lead at 6:51 in the third period. Marchin took a shot that was denied by Clark, but Schoo was there for the rebound in front, as he crashed the net for his fourth of the season. Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) also earned an assist.
After Dartmouth pulled Clarke with over two minutes remaining for the extra skater, Kania made a big glove save to deny Drew O'Connor's one timer, securing the shutout win.
Brown went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Dartmouth outshot Brown, 30-25.
Brown will wrap up the regular season next weekend when the Bears host Quinnipiac (3/1) and Princeton (3/2).
