CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown men's hockey team scored twice in the first period, but No. 17 Harvard responded with four unanswered goals, as the Bears fell on the road, 4-2, in ECAC play Friday night at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Brown (10-11-5, 7-7-5 ECAC) snapped a four-game unbeaten stretch with the loss, while Harvard moved to 15-8-3, 11-6-2.
Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) both scored on the power play, while Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) chipped in with two assists. Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) stopped 33 shots for the Bears. Cameron Gornet had 28 saves for the Crimson.
"We played pretty good hockey once we got settled in the first, they're a good hockey team," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We didn't have enough intensity on our power play during the five-minute major, and then we gave them a 5-on-3. We've got to get back to a 60-minute effort and being intelligent."
Brown scored two power-play goals in the opening period, starting at 11:14, when Giuttari blasted home a shot from in front of the blue line for his team-best third power-play goal of the season. Marchin and Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) earned assists on the play.
Berger added another power-play goal at 17:27 for his seventh of the season and fifth in as many games, as he scored from the right circle on a feed from Marchin to give the visitors a two-goal lead at the first intermission. Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) also picked up an assist.
Harvard responded with two goals in the middle frame. Lewis Zerter-Gossage tipped in a shot 2:48 into the period before the Walsh scored during a 5-on-3 power play at 16:37 to tie the game after 40 minutes.
Nathan Krusko pushed the Crimson in front with a wraparound goal at 2:01 in the third period. After Gornet turned away a pair of strong Brown attempts from Berger and Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.), John Marino scored at 17:47 for the two-goal advantage.
Brown pulled Kania for the extra skater with two minutes remaining but the Crimson kept the Bears off the board to secure the win.
Brown will visit Dartmouth tomorrow night at 7 PM.
