
Mosenthal Leads Women’s Lacrosse Past Quinnipiac, 16-9

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 16-9 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears were fueled by sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) who had a career-high eight goals, which ties Anne Marie Van Hengel '84 for the program record for goals in a game.
"It was great to get our first game under our belt," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We played against a physical and well coached Quinnipiac team. We had some great efforts all around. We look forward to getting on the road and playing Ohio State."
Brown (1-0) jumped out to a 9-5 lead at the half with Mosenthal netting five goals in the opening frame. The Bears quickly gained a 3-0 lead to open the contest with sophomore Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) scoring the first goal of the season at 28:05. Mosenthal then added back-to-back goals at 26:42 (free position) and 25:38. Quinnipiac (1-1) got on the board at 22:58 (Megan Szawlowski, man-up) before junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) netted her first goal at 21:56 for a 4-1 Bear advantage.
Szawlowski added her second while the Bobcats were a man down to cut Brown's lead in half (4-2) before the Bears went on a 4-0 run to increase their lead to 8-2, with Mosenthal (18:47, 14:40) and senior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (15:18, 14:23) each scoring twice.
Brianna Fitzgerald scored QU's second man-up goal of the evening at 11:04 before Mosenthal added her fifth of the half on a free position shot at 8:13. The Bobcats registered the final goals of the opening half (2) with Gabby Beckett scoring a man-up tally with 29 seconds left on a free position shot, bringing the score to 9-5 in favor of Brown.
Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) made four saves in the opening half in her first collegiate action while Allie Kelsey made three saves in the opposing net. Brown held a heavy lead in shots for the first at 21-9 and doubled up on draw controls with a 10-5 advantage.
Like the first, the Brown controlled the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 7-4. Quinnipiac scored the first goal of the second half (Kuhn) at 27:22. DeGennaro (23:24) and Fowler (23:02) both followed with their second of the contest on free position shots to give the Bears an 11-6 lead. Kuhn completed the hat trick at 22:04 on a free position.
Mosnethal added her sixth at 20:23 (free position) while junior KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) added her first of the season at 17:50 for a 13-7 Bear lead. The Bobcats added a score at 9:17 (Kuhn) before Mosenthal netted two (8:54, 4:55) and Moinuddin completed a hat trick of her own (8:00). Kuhn scored the final goal of the game at 2:21 for the final of 16-9.
The Bears doubled the Bobcats' shot output in the second at 16-8 and again held the draw control lead (9-3). Overall, Brown outshot Quinnipiac, 37-17.
A total of nine yellow cards were given out, three going against Brown and six against Quinnipiac.
Moinuddin finished the contest with three goals and one assist while Fowler and DeGennaro each contributed two goals. Tucker made one stop in the second to bring her total to five saves while Allie Kelsey turned away five shots in the second to bring her total to eight.
Defensively, freshman Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.) led the Bears with two caused turnovers while eight other players totaled one caused turnover for Brown.
The Bears next travel to Ohio State on Monday, Feb. 18 for a 3:00 p.m. game.
