
Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season Against Quinnipiac and Ohio State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team will open the 2019 season on Saturday, Feb. 16 by hosting Quinnipiac at 4:00 p.m. The Bears will then take a trip to Ohio State on Monday, Feb. 18 (3:00 p.m.).

2019 OUTLOOK
The Bears return their top-five scorers from last season, including goal and point (64) leader Risa Mosenthal, who recorded 55 goals and nine assists in her rookie campaign. Junior Emma DeGennaro was second in scoring with 32 goals and 18 assists for 50 points while senior Hafsa Moinuddin was third with 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points. Mosenthal, DeGennaro and senior Caroline Zaffino were named Second Team All-Ivy while Moinuddin earned Honorable Mention honors. Defensively, junior Emily Fryer led the team in ground balls (34) while senior Olivia Lee tied for second in caused turnovers (16). Zaffino registered 82 draw controls to lead Brown and also set the school record. Junior Maggie Bigelow paced the goalies last year, leading the team with 12 starts while recording a 11.89 goals-against average and a .401 save percentage. The Bears set team records for goals in a season (218), points (303), draw controls (236) and shots (480) in 2018. Brown finished last season with a 9-6 overall record and were 2-5 in the Ivy League, tying for fifth place in the conference standings with four other teams.
ALL-TIME VS. QUINNIPIAC
The Bears and Bobcats have met seven times, with Brown leading the overall series, 6-1. The two teams played in 2018, an 18-7 victory for the Bears at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Quinnipiac's last victory came in 2009, an 11-6 decision in Hamden, Conn.
ALL-TIME VS. OHIO STATE
The Bears and Buckeyes have met just once, in 2012, with Ohio State coming away with a 16-3 win in Columbus.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Quinnipiac opened the season on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Stetson and defeated the Hatters, 14-13, in double overtime. The Bobcats finished last year 5-11 and were 1-7 in MAAC play. Ashley Bobinski returns as the team's leading scorer from 2018 with 49 points on 29 goals and 20 assist. Allison Kuhn also returns as the second leading scorer (35G, 7A). The Bobcats lost their starting goalkeeper from a year ago but return Allie Kelsey who appeared in 11 games and had a 11.84 goals-against average and a .468 save percentage. Kuhn leads Quinnipiac so far this year with five goals and one assist for six points. Megan Szawlowski has also chipped in three goals for the Bobcats.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State opened the season with two wins, starting at Cincinnati (16-6) on Feb. 8 and at home versus Detroit Mercy (19-5) on Feb. 10. The Buckeyes went 5-10 a year ago and 1-5 in the Big 10. Sara Dickinson returns after leading the squad in points (40) last season on 20 goals and 20 assists. Baley Parrott is also back for Ohio State, leading the team in goals (35) in 2018 while also ranking second in points (39). Jill Rizzo was the starting goalie last season and had a 12.78 goals-against average and a .501 save percentage while playing in all 15 games. Liza Hernandez opened 2019 with 10 goals and four assists for 14 points to lead the Buckeyes. Rizzo has received both wins in net while recording a 4.89 goals-against average and a .742 save percentage.
ZAFFINO NAMED TOP-10 RETURNING MIDFIELDER
Senior midfielder Caroline Zaffino was named one of New England Lacrosse Journal's Top-10 Returning Midfielders to Watch by the organization on Jan 18. Zaffino's first season with the Bears, after transferring from Boston College, saw her earn Second Team All-Ivy honors after setting Brown's single season record for draw controls with 82. She ranked fourth on the team in points (42) with 32 goals and 10 assists. Her 32 goals also ranked second on the team.
PRESEASON POLL
The Bears were picked fifth in the Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Preseason Media Poll, released by the conference on Feb. 7. Defending league champion Princeton took the top spot in the poll with 12 first-place votes and 124 total points. Penn followed in second with four first-place votes and 115 total points while Dartmouth (96 points) and Cornell (68 points) rounded out the top half of the poll. Brown (50), Harvard (47), Columbia (42) and Yale (34) filled out the remainder in the fifth through eighth slots, respectively.

Brown added 11 players to its 2019 roster. The freshmen include: midfielder Jordan Torres (Andover, Mass.), midfielder/attack Michaella McCarthy (Portsmouth, N.H.), midfielder Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), midfielder Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.), attack Julia Kavan (Garden City, N.Y.), midfielder Casey Hearns (Commack, N.Y.), midfielder Kelsey Shea (Vienna, Va.), attack Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.), attack Emily Marciano (Clifton, Va.), goalie Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) and midfielder Erin Schafer (Pleasanton, Calif.).
