PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer junior center back Sydney Cummings has earned Second Team All-America honors, becoming the Bears' first All-America selection since 2000, the United Soccer Coaches announced on Thursday night.
Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) stands as Brown's first All-American since Michaella Rooney '01 in 2000, as Brown's second All-American since 1990, and as the Bears' 10th All-American in program history.
A three-time All-Ivy selection, Cummings played a critical role in helping the Bears tally 13 shutouts in 2019, the most clean sheets in program history. In the NCAA rankings, the Brown defense stood second in goals allowed (eight), third in save percentage (.890), and fifth in GAA (0.40).
A First Team All-Ivy and First Team All-East Region choice this fall, Cummings played all 1,790 minutes on the season. Over the course of her career, she has played 4,803 of a possible 4,822 minutes (99.6 percent), while aiding the Bears to 24 clean sheets. In 2019, she paced the team and ranked third in the Ivy League with seven assists.
Cummings – a member of the Guyana national team who played in 2019 FIFA World Cup qualifiers – helped lead the Bears to a historic season in which the team earned its first Ivy League title and NCAA appearance since 1994. In 2019, Brown set program records for wins in a season (14), home wins in a season (11), and shutouts in a season (13).
The Bears posted an overall record of 14-2-3, while registering an undefeated 6-0-1 mark in Ivy League play, finishing the year unbeaten in conference play for the first time since 1994. Brown notched an 11-0-1 mark at home, including an 11-0-0 record during the regular season.
Brown won its 13th Ivy League title in program history, tied for the most in conference history, while making its seventh all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Bears advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament after topping Monmouth in a penalty kick shootout, 4-1.
