TROY, N.Y. – Rookie Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) gave the Brown men's hockey team an early lead, but Rensselaer evened the score with two seconds left in regulation and then scored early in overtime to top the Bears, 2-1, in Saturday's ECAC game at Houston Field House.
Brown moved to 3-9-0 overall and 3-7-0 in the ECAC. RPI improved to 6-9-1, 3-5-1.
Senior goalie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 27 saves for the Bears, including 13 stops in the middle frame. Alex Calvaruso stopped 25 shots for the Engineers.
"I thought we played much better hockey, but it's one of those situations, we have to find a way to extend a lead," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We had our chances, but it was just one of those nights. We can't hang our heads. We have to find a way to come out of this stretch and understand it's a long season, but I appreciated the work ethic, the determination, and how hard the guys played."
Krys opened the scoring at 16:25 in the first period. After Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) had his shot blocked in the slot, Krys was right there for rebound, and quickly snapped a shot under the crossbar for his second goal of the season. Jallen and Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) collected assists on the play.
Rensselaer threatened to even the score seven minutes into the second period, as Mike Gornall intercepted a pass during Brown's first power play of the game for a shorthanded breakaway, but Nieto came up with a big stop to preserve the lead.
Brown clamped down on the defensive end to start the third period as the Bears outshot the Engineers by a 6-1 margin halfway through the frame.
After Rensselaer pulled Calvaruso for the extra skater with 1:10 remaining, Gornall scored an extra-attacker goal with two seconds left on the clock to force overtime. Tristan Ashbrook then netted the game winner 36 seconds into the extra period to complete the comeback victory for the Engineers.
The two teams combined for three penalties. James Crossman (Denver, Colo.) paced the Bears with four shots.
Brown will host No. 11 UMass on Tuesday night to wrap up the first part of the season before the exam break.
