PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer senior midfielder Abby Carchio and freshman defender Rachyl Francisco have both gained Ivy League weekly honors after the Bears clinched their first Ivy League title and NCAA tournament berth since 1994 with a 1-0 (2OT) win over Penn, the Ivy League conference office announced on Monday.
Carchio earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors while Francisco captured Ivy League Rookie of the Week accolades.
A native of Lakeville, Mass., Carchio scored the game-winning goal in Brown's 1-0 (2OT) win over the Quakers on Saturday. In the 110th minute, Carchio stepped to the penalty spot and drove a penalty kick into the right side of the net. Carchio netted her third goal – and first game-winning goal – of the season. She now has 16 career goals and five career game-winning goals. Carchio improved to 3-for-3 on penalty kicks in her career.
A native of San Jose, Calif., Francisco played 107 minutes – only leaving the field for three minutes due to blood – helping Brown post its 11th shutout as a team – and fourth clean sheet in Ivy play – this season. The Bears – ranked second in the NCAA in fewest goals allowed and third in both GAA and save percentage – pulled within one clean sheet of the program-record 12 shutouts in 1984.
Brown has tied a program record with 13 wins on the year, matching the teams from 1977, 1984, and 2000. The Bears have now posted six Ivy wins for the seventh time in program history and for the first time since 1994. Brown improved to 10-0-0 at home on the year and has outscored opponents, 21-2. The 10 victories mark a program record for home wins in a season. The Bears have now gone 13-0-0 in their last 13 home matches, outscoring opponents 33-3. The win streak is one shy of the program-record 14 straight wins from 1976-78.
The Bears won their 13th Ivy League title all-time, tied for the most league crowns in conference history. Brown will make its seventh all-time appearance in the NCAA Championships. The selection show for the championships will take place on Monday, Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. First round games will be played on either Nov. 15, Nov. 16, or Nov. 17.
In the latest rankings, the Bears check in at No. 6 in the NCAA RPI Rankings, No. 9 in the Top Drawer Soccer national poll, and at No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.
The selections for Carchio and Francisco mark Brown's eighth and ninth Ivy League weekly awards of the season. Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) won Ivy League Player of the Week on Sept. 9 and Sept. 16, junior Star White (Norfolk, Va.) took Ivy Player of the Week on Sept. 30 and Oct. 21, freshman forward Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) gained Ivy Rookie of the Week on Oct. 7 and Oct. 28, and freshman forward Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) captured Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Oct. 14.
Next, Brown hosts Merrimack in its non-conference finale on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) before playing at Yale in its regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
