PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) gave the Brown men's soccer team the lead early in the second half, as the Bears battled Penn to a 1-1 draw, in Saturday's Ivy League match at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (3-8-4, 1-1-3) outshot the Quakers by an 18-16 margin. Penn moved to 6-5-3, 2-1-2.
"It was another tough Ivy game against a really good opponent," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "We created a lot of opportunities. The guys worked really hard. They are down because we tied, and we knew that we needed to win. I give them credit for pushing as hard as they could. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the second goal that we needed, but I'm proud of the guys for their effort, and we'll keep moving forward."
Sophomore keeper Max Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) turned away seven shots for the Bears, while Dane Jacomen had three saves for the Quakers.
Brown held a slight 9-8 shot advantage in a scoreless opening period, but Waldau came up with three big stops in the period, including two on Brandon Bartel in the final five minutes.
Chow opened the scoring five minutes into the second half with his third goal of the season and second in as many games. The senior sent a corner kick into the box, off the post and into the back of the net to give him seven points in the last five contests.
Penn responded in the 65th minute to even the score. After Waldau denied Brandon Bartel on a penalty kick, Kai Lammers stormed the box and finished the loose ball for his second of the season.
The Bears produced four corner kicks in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but the Quakers held the home side off the board to force overtime. The two keepers traded stops in extra time, as Waldau and Jacomen posted two saves apiece in 20 minutes of overtime to seal the draw.
Chow paced all players with six total shots. Brown held a 9-8 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears will visit Yale next Saturday at 4:30 PM.
