Bears at a Glance
Under the guidance of head coach Brendan Whittet, who is entering his 11th campaign behind the bench, the 2019-20 Brown men's hockey team is poised to make another run in ECAC Hockey this season.
Brown is coming off a winning season last winter, when the Bears went 12-7-2 down the stretch, highlighted by a trip to the ECAC Tournament Final Four. Brown earned the eighth seed in the conference tournament, and swept Princeton at home in the first round, capped by a triple overtime victory to clinch the series in the longest game in program history. Brown then swept top-seeded and No. 5 Quinnipiac on the road to advance to Lake Placid.
The Bears welcome back 20 letterwinners from last year's team and will be led by a five-player senior class. Brown will host 14 games on the East Side this winter, including six games against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament.
All-Time in Season Openers
Since Brown's first season in 1897-98, the Bears are 38-53-4 in season-opening games. Brown dropped a one-goal game to Yale, 3-2, at home in last season's opener.
All-Time Against Yale
Yale leads the all-time series with Brown, which dates back to the 1897-1898 season, by a 101-77-8 margin. The Bulldogs claimed a pair of one-goal games to sweep the season series last winter.
Scouting Yale
Yale will bring back nine of its top 10 point producers from last season, despite the loss of Joe Snively to graduation, who led the Bulldogs in goals (15), assists (21) and points (36). Senior goaltender Corbin Kaczperski has 28 career games under his belt and posted a .908 save percentage and a 2.47 goals-against average in 2018-19. Yale went 15-15-3 overall last season and finished tied for fifth (11-10-1) in the league standings, advancing to the quarterfinals of the ECAC Tournament.
Captains
Senior Zach Giuttari will wear the "C" for the first time in his career after he served as an assistant captain last year. The Rhode Island native earned All-Ivy honors as a junior after he ranked second on the team in scoring and first among defensemen with 20 points. He also paced the Bears in power-play goals, game winners, blocked shots and a +8 rating. Fellow seniors Brent Beaudoin and Jack Gessert will serve as assistant captains.
National Poll Votes
Brown has been listed under receiving votes in both the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey national polls since the start of the season. Brown is one of six ECAC schools receiving votes in the latest set of USCHO national rankings. The Bears will play against seven teams listed in the preseason USCHO top-20 rankings during the 2019-20 season, including national championship runner up UMass.
Youth Movement
Brown will welcome ten newcomers to the lineup this season, which is tied for the fourth-largest rookie class in college hockey this season and is made up of six forwards and four defensemen. Merrimack has the largest freshman class with 16 rookies.
PK Success
Brown finished third on the penalty kill in ECAC conference games last season at 86 percent, behind only Clarkson and Cornell. The Bears also totaled four short-handed goals over the course of the season, good for second among all ECAC schools.
Up Next
Brown will play five of its opening six games against Ivy League opponents, while the first eight games will all be ECAC contests. The Bears will travel to Cornell and Colgate next weekend.
